What does this mean? I heard some people who got P and T scholarships didn't have any mention of what scholarship they were getting, and checked it online. Is this a cruel joke on USC's part or is it actually admission/consideration for a scholarship? Maybe it is a much smaller (like $1000 a year) scholarship? Anybody know what's going on?

What are the dates for the Explore USC? The Presidential dates are early March.

CONGRATULATIONS on your admission! (How is admission to an amazing university a cruel joke???)

I definitely echo alamemom’s sentiments. What I would give just to be able to have an acceptance…

Anyways, funnyman, you should check the dates for the ExploreUSC sessions they’re offering. Are they the Trustee/Presidential dates or the later, one-day, sessions for all admitted students? I’m pretty sure that anyone who’s admitted without a T/P invitation gets to attend the latter. Congrats man, you’ve earned it.

OH NO. That isn’t what I meant by “cruel joke” I meant since USC gives out regular acceptances during March, but they sent mine in January. What I meant by the “joke” is that they may have accidentally sent mine to me now early when I actually wasn’t deserving of a scholarship. Of course I am thrilled with the admission. I can relax a bit knowing that I have at least one school I can for sure attend, though cost is kind of a huge problem right now.

BigKev and alamemom, thanks for your congratulations. It means a lot to me. As for you BigKev, I don’t see any reason why you wouldn’t get into USC. So, if your’s doesn’t come in the next couple of weeks it will probably get to you in March. I wouldn’t be surprised if you found a nice fat envelope from USC sometime soon.

Also, when I get to the RSVP system, and I click on reserve, it only offers early April dates. I guess it is no P or T for me. If there is no interviewing required for me, is it fine for me to just not go to this session? It would be hard to get away from school for so long, and I’d probably have to spend a lot on travel too.

Kev, you’ve earned it too, and I am looking forward to congratulating you.

^agreed. Be sure to post here or start a thread (if it is appropriate) when you get your admission letter. Like I said, it wouldn’t be surprising if you got something in the next couple weeks, even. Good Luck!

But something weird is though, why would USC notify me now if I wasn’t getting a scholarship? Shouldn’t I instead be notified of the decision in March/April?

You could send it back :)

In the past, there were always a few who received an early acceptance without a Trustee or Presidential invite, and many of them were later awarded a smaller scholarship such as the University, Directors, or Dean’s (I am starting to feel like I have typed that a LOT…). There seem to be far MORE hearing early this year, so I am not sure what to think of that. Only time will tell. Keep us updated!

funnyman, I wouldn’t recommend going out to LA just for the one-day ExploreUSC unless a) you’re close (which doesn’t sound like it’s the case), b) you’re going to the area already, or c) you’ve narrowed down your decision to two or three schools. The non-scholarship sessions seem like a nice way to visit USC, but the cost wouldn’t justify it, for me at least.

Of course, if you’re going to be making a ~$200K+ decision, it would definitely be worth it to check out your final two or three choices. Personally, I’d hate to make such a large commitment without actually seeing for myself what I’d be making it for.

Also, I’d like to thank everyone for their support. Hopefully I will get a nice surprise in the mail soon, it would be a huge relief to my psyche.

I got the same exact thing

hmm… it looks like there are three types of notifications from USC so far.

Accepted with T/P scholarship

Accepted but no scholarship

Not accepted, no T/P scholarship, but will be considered for other scholarships

Any other type?

LOL. Send it back? No thank you. I’d like to stay part of the Trojan family =). Once again, I’m not complaining, just curious why they would send it in January if there wasn’t some other reason, because after all, USC admissions folks know what they are doing, so they must have had a reason. I would just like to find out why. But you are right that only time will tell. Though it would be great if someone else could tell too. =)

Moshot,
It has always been SC’s policy to send acceptances before letters of regret. As far as I know none of these students have been denied entrance. Most, sadly, were not selected among a pool of 22,000 to be interviewed for the two top scholarships.

Last year the students who received the Dean’s Scholarships were not notified at the same time as the Trustee candidates. The Dean’s does not require an interview.
As alamemom has commented there are other scholarships still to be awarded.

funnyman, I’m not sure, but I think you may have misunderstood (of course, it’s possilbe that I misundertood! )

I don’t think anybody found their P or T scholarships ONLY online, with no mention of P or T in their acceptance packets. I think that a lot of people, my son included, checked online, and discovered their P or T award there, only because their packets had not yet arrived. Once those same people’s packages came in the mail, they were annotated with the same P or T that the people previously saw online. Looking online was just a way to find out early.

In other words, I believe that everybody’s online results and acceptance packet results have matched so far. (unless I missed something – which is entirely possible!)

Hi SimpleLife. Thanks for answering. You are probably right. Maybe USC was just nice and gave me a regular admission a month earlier (maybe to boost my ego and the egos of others who got letters these past few days). Though I am thrilled to have the acceptance on my hands (the package is very beautiful, I must admit), it almost feels like a semi-rejection, since without a P or T scholarship, attending USC will be hard to justify financially. There are plenty of state schools, which, while will not match USC, will still give me a decent education. Hopefully that isn’t how this ends. I’m still hoping on financial aid, and (maybe? BIG maybe) some scholarships from USC. There’s also some outside scholarships I am looking at, but those will only chip away a little at the cost.

Your three types of notifications do make sense, but for those who got acceptances in January (albiet after the P/T people), should still be getting the acceptances a little earlier for a reason? Or, like I said, maybe USC is just nice to applicants. Maybe it is just an acceptance/no scholarship. In that case it would actually be better to not have any notification because then there is still some chance of a scholarship. Anyone got any ideas?

I have a guess – which is ONLY, and totally, a guess …

(We’ve already talked about Bacc/MD program people on various threads – a lot of them found out early, for other reasons. My guess doesn’t really address them.)

Regarding non-B/MD people: Could it be that USC reviewed those who applied by the scholarship deadline, narrowed their pool to the top candidates (all of their potential scholarship candidates), and then narrowed the pool even further to the P’s and T’s, and then to those who were clear admits (and likely Dean’s or Director’s), and THEN sent out notifications of acceptances to all of the above?

The P’s and T’s were notified not only of acceptance, but of the awards they’ll be interviewing for. The next-tier of top candidates were notified of acceptance, but not yet of scholarships. Of those, several (all?) will be getting Dean’s or Director’s, maybe?

Like I said, this is ALL a TOTAL guess! But that’s pretty much what you asked for!

Disclaimer: I have been wrong many, many times in my long life. :)

It’s been said many times before – only time will tell.

@GG, yup, it looks like the procedure is slightly different this year based on the posts.

@SL, I agree, I’m sure there is a method to this …ness/mystery.

@FM, ‘May be’ USC is trying to figure out if “2. Accepted but no scholarship” category would qualify for FA before considering them for smaller scholarships. No clue on third type though. Well, we’ll find out soon, I hope.

In addition to your three types of notifications, there is one more:
