You do not have to be in the top 10% of your high school graduating class to apply to the University Honors Program:
“Any student applying for admission to Texas A&M University may also apply to the University Honors Program. We invite any student who seeks an enriched, demanding curriculum to submit an application, regardless of their class rank and standardized test scores. Selection preference will be given to students who are named as National Merit® Scholars, National Achievement® Scholars, and National Hispanic Scholars.”

Jon, Do students get access to the same Honors courses and same priority in registration with departmental Honors Program as they do with the University Honors Program? Thank you.

Background: Son is incoming freshman admitted to Engineering Honors Program for Fall 2013. He is a National Hispanic Scholar with 700s on both SAT M & CR. He is also a National AP Scholar, National Merit semifinalist and in the top 25% of his class. However, he is not a NMF and is not in the top 10%. So we thought he would be ineligible for the University Honors Program.I did not know one could apply to the Univ. Honors Program if one is not in the top 10% or NMF.

Yes, students participating in college or departmental Honors programs have many of the same privileges as students in the University Honors Program including being assigned an Honors Priority Registration. A full listing of the benefits of being in the University Honors Program is at [What Is Honors?](http://honors.tamu.edu/Honors/About%20Honors.html).

My son is a fall 2013 freshman at TAMU (Mechanical Engineering). He is a National Merit Scholar and was admitted into University Honors and will be living in Lechner Hall. His NSC was just last week, and unfortunately, all the honors courses he tried to get into were full. We were really hoping he could take honors Math 151 and Engineering 111. Now we are worried about him getting the 6 hours of honors credit this year. We were told that honors students received some priority registration, but our son was blocked at every turn, by full classes. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

There were some additional ENGR 111 Honors seats that opened this past week, so you might visit with the folks in the College of Engineering about whether or not your son might be able to get forced into the appropriate section. The Math department has been doing some limited forcing into MATH 151, too, but you would need to contact them to see what is possible.

Our advisors will work with your son to ensure that he has a workable plan to meet distinction requirements. If a student doesn’t meet the 6-hour requirement, it prompts a meeting with an advisor to ensure that the student is still planning to complete the distinction and to help make sure they have a plan to do so.

Hope this helps!

Also, to avoid continuing to derail Rohank’s thread, I’ve created another thread where you can ask more questions about Honors as you have them:
