Geez. DD has been deferred at 3/4 of her early action schools (Boston U, Santa Clara U, and Northeastern). Waiting to hear from Seattle University - supposedly Dec 23 they mail out the letters. NE and SCU both stated that they had a 23% increase in early action applications. She has uneven statistics (3.3 GPA, 2100 SATs, with a disclosure of ADHD in a very responsible way by her counselor and herself). Also, her name begins with V - I wonder if they even finished the pile with so many! Frustrating - you put all that effort in to jump through the EA hoops, and you still have to wait.

To make matters worse, we don't know if she was deferred on full review (in other words with her SATs present), or if they reviewed her before her SATs arrived because of a SNAFU with College Board and simply deferred her because all the pieces weren't present that were required. She will be calling all three schools, but just really discouraged.

Hoping that Seattle U comes through - their deadline was later, so the College Board scores arrived closer to the deadline. They are also easier to get into - we are hoping she won't get a fourth deferral.

OK - vent over. Just discouraged. shrugging shoulders now - needed a little support.

Oh, that is a hard thing to be dealing with for her and for you. :(

It’s hard to get to the “this too shall pass” state of mind, but I hope the Seattle U. news is good, and that there are some exciting options on the table come this spring. :)

I’m sorry to hear that. It was almost (almost) a relief when PMKjr’s SCEA school turned him down outright. I think deferrals are hard on everyone.

I wish your daughter the very best of luck.

All you need is one and that will happen. It’s just the angst to figure out which one. A year from now, she’ll be dealing with weeder classes and finals and you’ll forget all this stage. But it’s tough waiting right now. Deferrals stink.

OP–I feel your pain. DS also has some academic blips in his transcript. Has 13 applications out the door, has only heard from two schools (despite the fact that several schools he applied to have rolling admissions and had complete applications from him in mid-September), and both have said they want to see his first term grades before making a decision. Yes–it makes perfect sense from the schools’ standpoints. But he told me the other night at dinner that he’s been dreaming about college–just about getting in somewhere. And just last night my oldest came home, asked DS what’s happening on the applications front, and I half-smiled and said, “He hasn’t gotten rejected anywhere!” (and DS immediately said, “But I haven’t gotten in anywhere.”)

limabeans–I know I know. I just really thought we’d have gotten one piece of good news before the holidays.

Hang in there. D was also deferred. Big blow, especially since many of her friends and classmates are already accepted. The worst was Xmas morning – unwrap presents, then trudge upstairs to send out 4 apps. Next day, 4 more. Ugh. I feel bad for her, but your D will get in, and as soon as she hears positive news, she (and you) will feel so much better. That’s what I’m hoping. :)

Also EA has become so common place, that it almost has become RD by default…Having gone thru this situation last year,D got defferred at Northeastern, rejected at Pitt (main, accepted to Pitt/@Bradford,no thanks),accepted to U Mass, but not her major(no thanks),rejected Penn state Main(accepted to PSU@ someforgotten place, no thanks)…Defferred at Villanova, and was accepted RD there…also accepted Fairfield/Drexel/Dusquense…currently at "Nova…My guess is EA deferral will become a RD acceptance at one or more schools…Best of Luck!!!

We are in the same boat here. 3 def (SCU, SMU, Redlands) one acceptance (ASU - but that’s last choice - too big). DD has 9 other out there, of which 3 were EA that we haven’t heard from yet (UMiami, USD, Chapman). So far, it seems they all want the 1st semester grades which unfortunately are not the best. DD submitted two more last night. This is going to be a very long winter wait!

I have been throught this twice, in '08 and '10 and will go through it again in '13. Last year my DS applied to one EA (rejected outright) and 9 RD. All the schools he really wanted to go to didn’t give a decision until late March. I know it is hard, but my advice to you is to try and not think about it until then. The waiting is horrible and last year by mid-March I was a complete wreck. I know you have heard it before, but everything works out in the end. It really and truly does. My kids and all of their friends are very happy with where they ended up, even if it wasn’t where they thought they would be.

That’s really tough. Encourage your D to work extra hard at school in the coming months, deferrals often happen in the case of uneven stats because they want to wait and get a little more info on you academically. They see potential, but they’re somewhat unsure. I wouldn’t bother stressing out trying to ascertain what caused the deferral. Whether it was after full review or due to the college board SNAFU doesn’t matter too much, what’s done is done. Focus now on what you can do to improve your situation for the next round. Big push on schoolwork, maybe think about sending in a supplmentary letter of recommendation (if it could be from her teacher in one of her weaker classes who can attest to her work ethic and general brightness even if her grades are not so high, for example), and write a letter to the school or school(s) she really likes reaffirming her strong interest and why she thinks she’s a good candidate.

Smithie and Proud and others - thank you for your encouragement! As the OP, I must say that you are right - things look MUCH better once you have an acceptance. Our DD did get accepted at the fourth EA school (Seattle) as well as her safety (DePaul University). Both gave her scholarships, which we were not expecting so they are looking really good.

Things DO look up after one, and in her case when the second one came the other ones began to fade from memory.

She did call each deferred school - each one responded differently. SCU would say nothing, Northeastern took 15 minutes to review her app before calling us back and was very kind but discouraging about the chances of her getting in (they said she would probably need a dramatic GPA increase) and Boston U was simply brief and factual. We do plan to send an additional community recommendation, but honestly are no longer holding our collective breaths. To the poster who is waiting for SCU, have you investigated SEattle University ? From all reports, Santa Clara and Seattle are very very similar in tone and character but Seattle is a little easier to get into and has more merit aid, and they have some nice merit scholarships that are laid out by SAT and GPA online.

All comforting words. (One of the reasons I love CC!) I’m not stressed, and tend to be a fairly patient person. I would like to see that first (hopefully not last) acceptance, though.

And I do fret a little about merit aid–I’m assuming if DS is deferred to RD chances of that are pretty much nil?

And by the way, I went to Redlands. Had a terrific education for my bachelor’s there and still keep in touch with a number of my friends from there. It is easier to keep in touch with them since they married each other :)

HOORAY!! First admission came in the mail yesterday. Skinny envelope so we were really not expecting good news. (Yes–we re-read it several times.) In hindsight, DS’s older brother hadn’t even gotten his first application in by this point of his senior year. But DS SOOOO wanted to get apps in early/start hearing early.

Shoot4moon: DD wants mostly warm weather - as you can see she’s an easterner wanting to go west! Keeping our fingers crossed. Still haven’t heard from the three EAs. :(
