Sempitern, you're going to make a GREAT politician! Here's why!

from Tulane Thread: another scholarship letter?
I never said tulane was a bad school, i just said that it wasnt a good school for me

oh my gosh...i was thinking about what you said mea...all this fussing and stuff..oh my gosh...what if i dont get into rice..oh my freaking gosh....dang test scores..but other ppl have great scores and still didnt get in. hmm...but with better scores i have a better chance..oh gosh!!....
........................................

Given the surprises of the ID decisions thread, I wouldn't be so certain that xxxx test score will keep you in or out. I'm sure you're excellent in many other ways, don't worry too much.

is starting to get grumpy Guys, the snail mail is driving me nuts. I want my packet! Priority takes 5 days to overseas, right? pulls up a chair beside mailbox

They'll FedEx your package. Even within the US, FedEx-ed stuff has taken up to two weeks to get to me, so, well ... you're probably going to have to wait.

And mea is right. I know a kid who is a white, un-hooked, privilieged male, who got into Rice with SAT scores quite close to Rice's 25th percentile. Now ... given his circumstances, you wouldn't think they would accept him because of his testing, since he's had every advantage in the world, right? Well ... they DID accept him, and I have a feeling it was because of his strong secondary school record, and consistent and committed extracurricular involvement.

It's still not here. Looks like jprencipe is right.

Rice accepts students that would fit well in their programs; I think this matter is obvious but difficult to grasp when many are rejected that possess stellar records. An individual could have cured cancer and still be rejected from Rice because he or she has all the wrong reasons for wanting to attend.

what would be a wrong reason to want to attend rice?

i want to go to rice because rice is like the only school that fits me and has an ecology and evolutionary biology [dying to take that class]...teacher are cool...so are the students [very interesting :) ]..great resources [library, computers, etc]...awesome campus...academic toughness...and i feel at home when i walk the campus...oh! food is awesome [lunch with student...wish i could go back for seconds]..the classes are interesting [sat in a few of them]...and just a lot of small reasons...love rice. Hey! i am not that crazy anymore...yay! reality finally hit me...i think lol.

Sometimes there are not even wrong reasons, there are no reasons! Some people simply cannot articulate why Rice would suit their needs. Moreover, though you may be able to articulate your reasons, as I mentioned previously, Rice looks at the qualities of the applicant and the applicant he/she is applying to, and determines whether the applicant would be suitable for that specific program. Students may possess the right reasons, but perhaps they do not possess the qualities that will help them shine in the major/school they have chosen.

how should rice know that? i am pretty sure that test scores dont count as much but eh...i mean...they dont know your personal abilities or your personal goals [someone told me that adcom say that they dont know their prospective students and so not knowing them well..how should they know that something is suitable??]. i am just curious...yall know so much!!

Hey! I am better now...no more crazy wannabeariceowlgirl..but i'll be crazy if yall want me to :)

There are various ways once you have reached the limits of the SAT and GPA, of course: ECs, diversity, essays, and so forth. Of course, there are limits in what one can even determine from that, but these are already assumed limits that complement the nature of college admissions, and we have to accept and work within them.
