Got waitlisted :( My info

I applied EDII to Emory and was waitlisted. Just want to give you all my stats for some info

SAT: 760 math 640 verbal
ACT: 30 (had a 24 on the 'reading' section... might have been glaring), 31 overall writing

My GPA: 3.2 throughout junior year, this year its like... ~4.2ish ya...

School: I go to one of if not the most prestigious private school in Texas/the South

Courseload: AP's aren't nearly as popular in my school as they are in typical schools. I took one AP last year(english and got a 4) and am taking 3 AP's this year and thats still more than most people. I have taken a full courseload each year though.

EC's: Hockey for the last 3 year, golf one year, ~150 hours community service, Inner City kid mentoring, summer jobs etc plenty of other good stuff

Essay: Common app-too typical... i had a better one I made for notre dame that i knew i should have used, its been much more successful than than the one i submitted to emory. Supplement-pretty much perfect, i won't go into details but it was everything they were looking for and more.

I know you may say my GPA just isn't there(and it really isn't), but I had two friends with similar/lower stats from my school that were accepted ED1, so i'm sorta regretting now applying then.

Other known problems for me: My school is just too good..... i'm in no way bragging here, but Emory is one of my stretch schools and pratically EVERYONE from my school that applies/gets into ivy leagues with ease uses it(along w/ wake, vanderbilt etc) as a backup, so right now they have a bunch of excelent apps that well exceed mine, which is also why i'm thinking people similar to me got in ED1 and I did not get in ED2(they didn't have all of the other apps ED1).

Anyway, i'm waitlisted, preparing a nice letter for my admission rep, moving my attention to other schools and just keeping my fingers crossed. If you have any questions please let me know and i'll be happy to answer them.

good luck man

actually, there's quite a bit you can do...if you haven't visited the campus. visit, and idk if emory does on campus interviews, but if they do, definitely do one. also, go to the alumni section of the emory website, and find the head of the alumni association in your area (I'm sure there's plently of people in it, as you're from texas)...try calling some of the alums, explain your situation and enthusiasm about emory, and see if they will do a brief interview with you to get to know a little about your interests, what kind of person you are, and then send a recommendation letter about you to emory (it may sound strange to randomly call people about something like this, but they belong to an alumni association, so they not only expect these kinds of things, they probably enjoy them). also, see if you can get a teacher, or even a coach, community service coordinator, etc., to write you another recommendation. and finally, if you have some sort of special talent that has not yet been highlighted in your application, highlight it (for example, my friend sent a tape of her playing cello to all her schools). best of luck!!! and if it doesn't work out, don't worry...I'm sure you'll end up someplace else that's just as great, and if not you can always transfer.

I think it is positive that you want to be pro-active. At the same time you must be a realist based upon previous year stats of waitlisted applicants.
Definitely express your strong interest in attending Emory in the form of an e-mail to your local admissions rep. Update him/her with an updated letter from guidance, transcript anything else that may give you an edge.

I assume your GPA hurt you in the decision making process. Have your grades increased this year?

If your guidance counselor is an advocate, why not request a phone call to your admissions rep. If you haven't visited, take a trip ASAP and meet with an admissions officer, preferably your local one. If the visit is feasible, and it was your first presence on campus, why not consider re-writing your why Emory essay and Fed Ex it ASAP.

Just some thoughts. If you really want Emory, give it your best shot!
Good luck! Hope to see you at orientation.

Thanks for the advice everyone.... i didn't think of any of those thigns to do, but i'll definitely do them. I didn't really think about it but i have nothing to lose at this point with Emory.

My grades have definitely improved this year... as of now i have a 4.2, i made sure my updated transcript was faxed the second it was ready(two days ago).

As for my essay I think i'll send them my other one that i'm wishing i had initally sent.

And i'll definitely start looking up an alumn in my area to try and get an interview.

As for visiting the campus, i sorrrta did. My family and I were there over xmas break to look at the school, but (as we knew) the admissions office and pretty much everything was closed. I put that down on my app, but i doubt it has any realy meaning as I guess they have no way to tell if i'm lying or not.

And if anyone's curroius.... their waitlist stats are that there are ~500-600 people on it and its ranged from year to year, anywhere from "0 to 150 people" have been taken for hte last four years... i'm guessing with everyone scrambling ot get into college these days more than ever that the # taken is going to be on the lower side.

Anyway thanks again for the advice! I've got a ton of work tonight but i'll get on all this stuff this weekend.
