Gotta love Asian parents

i swear, asian parents probably up the college suicide rate by at least 300%.

Heh, amen to that.

I got into Cornell... but my dad still wants me to stay on Harvard's wait-list and go there if they accept me

edit: oh, I'm asian btw :)

I'm Asian & my parents want me to get in any good university (top 100 national)...

Wow. I'm Asian, and I'm lucky that my parents aren't as strict.

Of course, they want me to go to an ivy, but they say that as long as I try my hardest and I'm am satisfied with where I'll be, then they won't be disappointed.

Yaaaay

You'd better get in!

I think more Asian-Americans should go into politics.

We need a voice!

Hahaha, syneria, the stereotype isn't always true, of course -- in northern Virginia, there are plenty of Asians who end up going to George Mason U, VATech, etc, etc and are happy about it. They're pretty alright schools, though they're seen as community colleges in the eyes of the stereotypical superstrict Asian parent.

But there are kids who aren't satisfied with those colleges and parents who will be ashamed even if their kids get into good universities like UVA... my parents were like that a few years ago. Now they're praying to god that I'll at least get into UVA. -_-

What bugs me the most about Asian parents (or at least mine) is that they rely so much on the reputation... just because my dad's peers at the hospital say that UVA is really good, he started believing that UVA was a good school, even though three years ago he was badmouthing it. When I told him I wanted to go to Smith or Barnard, which are freakin' Seven Sister schools, he told me they were third rate colleges and I wasn't going out of state unless it was for Ivy League/MIT/Stanford/Berkeley... sigh. This is a man who didn't know Ivy League schools existed outside of HYP until my cousins got into Columbia and UPenn like five years ago.

At least your asian parents didnt put you in SAT prep classes in 6th grade..I was completely terrified everyone was like 5 times taller than me.

And my SAT score STILL sucks

"At least your asian parents didnt put you in SAT prep classes in 6th grade..I was completely terrified everyone was like 5 times taller than me."

lol that happened in 8th grade for me. I was thrilled to get 450V 620M. ;)

Hmm I know everyone is all hyped up and angry at their parents and what not... but give your parents some credit. I was just as ****ed when they put me in SAT prep class and made me take practice SAT's which THEY actually timed...and shoved me into a boarding school...but in the end, it's just because they care for you and want you to do as well as you can.

My mom worked me through 6 months of SAT prep in 7th grade - memorizing 10 words of vocab a day (No joke or exaggeration).

She ignored the math section, because I was already in geometry, and she figured I would have practice in school. She wanted me to get the national recognition thing and though math was a shoo-in.

The result? 670 Verbal, 660 Math. Yes, that's right - no "National Level" recognition. Don't tell me that was "amazing" for a 12-year-old. I'll be honest; I cried.

believe me...been there done that
you dont know pressure until your summer work...in middle school...is going through the big red book (older kids and pressured seniors will know what i mean)
i mean...before my junior year we had 2-3 red books...you know...jsut in case i had nothing to do in the summer...

Well the last 3 days I basically pulled 3 all nighters in a row, haven't really slept at all since I've had just a flood of essays, tests, labs due(end of term). So today when I got home I slept for like 5 hours and then played some videogames and my dad yelled at me for being lazy.

I actually enjoyed memorizing SAT words...then again, I love reading and found the SAT words to greatly improve my reading speed, since many of the words could be found in the novels I like. I probably memorized around 10-20 words a day for a year or two (on and off, though, and lots of going back to rememorize words I had forgotten).

Reading a lot actually helps more with the SAT verbal section than simple flash cards.

This is funny. I'm Chinese-American and yet I can't relate to the stereotype in any way. I hate math and science and love english and politics. I've never taken an SAT prep class. I got an 800 on a portion of the SAT but it was the verbal, not the math. I don't know how to play violin or piano. I got into Berkeley and my parents want me to go to a small LAC instead of Cal. We eat rice with dinner every day though, so I guess I'm still Asian. ;)

Amen, brother. Amen.

word. in 5th grade i remember getting an SAT book for christmas. not kidding. i also got a globe and other educational crap. my mother thought math was a "shoo-in" as well cuz i was in geometry too. however i didn;t get that 800 in math nor that high 700s in verbal. my mother really wanted me to get the psat merit thing. i went to SAT classes since 6th grade and stopped in 11th grade. unfortunately i still didn't achieve the 2400 nor the PSAT merit thing. honestly, i cried as well, convinced that i was a failure at life.

o the curse of being asian

my asian parents gave up on berkeley when they realized i turned chinglish into an art.

It's understandable...however, some parents are just going too far. My mother was like that, but she's a little bit more open minded. The OP's father talked about Harvard crap, I think the OP should take his/her father to visit a campus outside the ivies. That might make him change his mind.
