Gov Scott's New Bill

On CC many people mentioned the new bill that Gov. Rick Scott passed. It said that UF and FSU would now be allowed to require 12 general ed credits of classes for incoming freshman that could not be fulfilled with AP credits.

What sort of classes do you think UF would require? Do you think dual enrollment would be able to fill the requirement for any of these classes?

I wouldn’t worry about it. Below is the text from the bill (and if you ever have problems falling to sleep, I highly recommend reading all 144 pages of that bill…you’ll not get by page 7…I know I didn’t.)

“In order to provide a jointly shared educational experience, a university that is designated a preeminent state research university may require its incoming first-time-in-college students to take a 9-to-12-credit set of unique courses specifically determined by the university and published on the university’s website. The university may stipulate that credit for such courses may not be earned through any acceleration mechanism pursuant to s. 1007.27 or s. 1007.271 3604 or any other transfer credit.”

The key here is “unique courses”, as these would be new courses developed by the university and not your standard AP classes. I think this reflects first year students arriving with 45+ credits (and bypassing much of the first two year curriculum).

None of this would impact transfer students and it’s very different from the recent trend at some schools (like at Dartmouth) of not accepting any AP credits.

As I understand it, UF got the greenlight from the Florida Legislature to create a totally online degree program. By doing so, a student could access UF courses without ever going to Gainesville (they sign up for an exam location closer to their location).

UF had as an option for IA students in 2012 to take 2 courses whch worked toward their major for a reduced rate of $600 (6 credits). The price included all fees.

There are some cynical reasons for this, but it accomplishes the objective of providing greater access to a Flagship University for less money. I have a son on campus, and even then he still has an online course.
