I just got a call from governor's school yesterday, offering me a spot (I was on the wait list). So, the question becomes: should I go? It would mean sacrificing some other things (mainly a mission trip, which would give me lots of community service hours), but on the other hand, I was chosen as one out of 60 in the state to go. How would it look on an app for college? Thanks.

It would look great. And odds are it's better than your current school. I'd say go for it.

Governor's school is quite prestigious. However, if what you want to do is your mission trip, then do it.

Don't think about how things would look on a college application; instead, think about which one you'd rather spend your summer doing.

On a side note, though, governor's school is ONLY for rising seniors, while I'm sure your mission trip could be postponed until next summer?

you already expressed your interest in governor's school when you applied and being one of the few students to go would look very good on your college apps.

either way, you would have a good experience to write about for your essays

Which one are you going to?

Im going to the one for Information, Society, and Tech.

From friends who went last year, I heard its a lot of fun

I would choose mission trip, just because I'm going to one this summer too XD
I figured that helping other people around the world and spreading the words of God would be more valuable than anything else that I might choose to do over the summer.

ee33ee: Are you going to the one in PA? Because that's where I got in!

On a separate note, tako, you've definitely got a point. And I think I'd rather do gov school. Thanks!

No problem, glad you made your decision.

Have fun this summer :)

What's a governor's school?..is it like a school with a specialty, like state-funded or something?

I go to this school called the Massachusetts Academy of Mathematics and Sciences, which admits 50 kids a year, and senior year is college courses at WPI..if it is similar to my school..i recommend you go. It might be harder, but you develop a strong work ethicc.

IMO, it would look pretty darn impressive to forgo such a prestigious honor to help out others in the eyes of an admissions officer.

yeah, but what are you going to write in the essay? i turned down governor's school for the mission trip? i think not. in any case, i vote governor's school because i went last year and it was sooooo much fun and not to much it was such a relief to be around such intelligent people for a while. and i assume you applied to the specialty that most suited you, so in that regard, it would be a great experience in that specific field.

"yeah, but what are you going to write in the essay? i turned down governor's school for the mission trip? i think not."

I don't see how that is inappropriate or idiotic. Writing something from the heart like,

"Forgoing my acceptance to the Governor's school for the mission in which I dedicated my entire summer has instilled in me traits and shown me something that education can never teach: [list traits]..."

in my opinion, is so much better. Trust me on this. I'm sure the Governor's school will be a great experience for you if you really wish to go though. I believe that by your going to the mission and stating a reason to forgo the governor's school will help you more in college admissions than if you go to the governor's school.

hmmm...i suppose that's good. haha i was most def thinking like bragging about it. which of course wouldn't be good. anyway, i think it's just whatever OP prefers because for me i would LOVE spending 5-6 weeks immersed in a subject that i love. but for some other people, those few days in a service environment is pretty much the greatest thing ever. but if OP is doing it just for "lots of community service hours," as the first post stated, then that is the WRONG rationale. period. it's all for passion, not for what looks best. always.

but yeah, sorry charlie, i misunderstood. :)
