My D has been asked to apply to one of the Virginia State Governor's Schools Her high school feels that this is a very selective program. So teachers are willing to assist/help her gain acceptance. However, I have been told that ND doesn't view this program the same way. Should we look for other programs or pursue this one since the high school is very supportive. (ND is her number one choice)

Ptb, if the Governor’s School you mention is as highly regarded as the one in Richmond (and if the atmosphere suits your daughters personality), I would think it would be a benefit for her to go. I know admissions departments “know” certain schools in different areas, so you might want to check with the counselors at your Governor’s School and see if they have had any grads apply/go to ND. An established relationship with ND and the high school counselors should be able to shed some light on the expectations, perceived strengths and weaknesses of the school.

I am not sure if the program is exclusively prestigious…I do not think it is that great and will open such great of opportunities, but it definetly depends on what she plans to do with her life and what part of Governor’s school she will be attending.

If she would enjoy the program, go for it. At a certain level, college admissions are largely a crapshoot, with the decisions based on apparently random factors over which the applicants have little control.
Most selective schools turn away most of their applicants, and there is only so much you can do to tilt the scales in your favor.

My freshman roommate went to the Maggie Walker Governor’s School. If that helps…

Wow. I started this thread back in 08. The end result - my D attended the Math, Science and Technolgy Governor School in the state of Virginia and now is a Notre Dame Freshman in the Engineering School class of 2014.
