what are the chances for someone with a GPA around 3.5/4.0? not a wide variety of ec's, but deeply involved in a few related ones?

Very small unless the ECs you are involved in are EXTREMELY impressive or you are Native American. I haven't seen heavily recruited athletes get in with less than 3.6 (I'm a longtime interviewer who has seen a lot). From all the kids I've interviewed, it seems like 3.6 is the cut off barring something totally sensational about you and the kids who get in with the 3.6s are the kids who are ranked #1 in the country in their sports, have published books, had a lead on Broadway, etc, so it's hard to imagine how totally excellent your ECs would have to be to get in with a 3.5. I've never interviewed a Native American, but my sense is that even for URMs they are in a special category, so they might be able to get in with a 3.5.

post your full stats, and a verdict can be rendered.

hmm... what about 3.0-3.5 but 5's on all ap's (incl. classes that u got b's and c's in) 2350 SAT plus the kind of strong ec's that u were talking about?

tennisdude--if you want to PM me about your ECs, I can offer a better analysis. That being said high grades with relatively low test scores is looked on more charitably than high test scores with relatively low grades. I'm not saying it's true of you, but many associate high test scores and low grades with being smart but lazy.

How about risers? I started off badly as a freshman (88 final avg) but have been pulling my grades up since then (soph. now).

actualyl someone at my school got into yale EA with a 3.3. But then again he was number one crew recruit for Yale. So figures.

Well, I am a riser also. I had almost straight B's (in the hardest classes though) for the first 3 semesters of school. Now for the last 2 I've had Straight A (in the toughest classes) I am ranked 22/365 but I'd be ranked Val if you only count the last few semesters.

So what would they say? Would the adcoms look at my Transcript and say sorry uw gpa is too low or would they ignore the times I did badly and focus on the 4 perfect semesters I (hope/likely) will have.

An upward trend is certainly better than a downward one and plenty of kids who don't have 4.0s get in. A couple of Bs your freshman year won't kill your application, but straight Bs for three semesters is a lot, especially absent extenuating circumstances. Keep up the great grades you've received recently, give Yale a shot, and have some safeties you love.

The thing about my transcript is that it varies a lot, for example... freshman year earth science class: 92 Q1, 98 Q2, 85 Q3, 90 Q4. It makes me look unstable, haha.

So what about Princeton and Stanford? Both don't consider frosh grades. If they don't consider them, than they would only consider one bad semester and then straight improvement. What do you think?

(I suppose though, they would still see the bad frosh grades and the bad 1st semester soph grades and would see a trend. Dang.)

I mean, would it be harder to get in with a GPA of 3.5/4.0, based on honors. If you get straight A's, but take a three or four classes that are not honors, would that hurt your chance b/c it really hurts your class rank.

Rank is more important than GPA. If you are Val with a 3.5, they will know that your school is highly deflated and will likely admit you. Go for rank more than GPA.

Do you have to be in the top 10 in class rank or something for the adcoms to consider you?

Well I don't know about Yale, but it is very similar to Stanford. Stanford according to their common data set http://www.stanford.edu/home/statistics/ has a GPA average of 3.9 and 89% of applicants come from the top ten percent of their class.

Stanford has admitted publicicly that it does not include freshmen year in their gpa calculation right?

Right (ten ch.)

But what about Yale? Does that include summer school between ninth and tenth grade? Also, does anyone know where summer school is offered for honors high school credit? I need to pull up my GPA.

"Stanford according to their common data set http://www.stanford.edu/home/statistics/ has a GPA average of 3.9 and 89% of applicants come from the top ten percent of their class."

And Stanford might be more inclined than Yale to save those "not top 10% slots" for world-class athletes.

I know about 5 or 6 ppl that have gotten in with a 3.5.
