GPA 90 / 3.7, low EC to none, High SAT score

junior who hasn’t taken sat yet but if get 1400+ what are my chances of getting into schools like Stony brook, City college of nyc, or even nyu if I dare say.

GPA for past 2 years have been 91 weighted, this year 92 unweighted (will most likely stay the same by june)

classes: not impressive
this year: 1 ap (haven’t taken exam yet) 1 honors
sophomore: 1 honors
freshmen 1 honors

ECs: barely anything ik im screwed
an instrument for past 6 years in school stopped this year
vocal lessons past 6 years outside of school
philosophy club only this year
(((planning on volunteering at a doctor’s office this summer only if I get accepted)))

will mostly likely get 1200 at best on sat but just IF I get a high score above 1400, what are my chances? please be honest, im pretty sure im going to community college to be frank

CUNY/SUNYs do not care all that much about ECs, especially CUNY. A good essay and recommendations will help, but it’s mostly academics. 1200 SAT gives you a chance, 1400 will get you in at the top tier schools within either system. Since you can put multiple campuses on one application for each system, nothing stops you from listing CCNY or Stony/Bing as your first choices and some lower-ranked schools as your safeties. Course rigor matters too, especially math/science at City College, so not having a good curriculum in high school might keep you from the upper-ranked schools. Take a shot anyway, it’s one application fee for each uni, and you might end up being happy with the ones that accept you even if they were not your first choice.

NYU is obviously a reach regardless of test scores, but if you do manage to get in, the cost of attending might not be worth it without scholarships. Community college is not the end of the world since you can always transfer to your top choice if you do well, and it saves you money on housing/tuition, but isn’t it a little too soon to resign yourself? Where you end up depends just as much (if not more) on your attitude and willingness to work for it as your academic abilities.

Omg tysm for this response, really appreciate it. I’m not giving up but with family pressure I’m really losing hope bc of my horrible ecs, so you really think Stony would accept me with my stats + a high SAT score if study really hard? Thanks again, puts me at ease a bit.

I think your course rigor is really falling short. Stony, although a SUNY, is not that easy to get into. Practically it’s another option for all NY State Residents, and everyone applies because you get a good education with an affordable price tag. That said, your test scores need to absolutely increase, and try to boost the rigor of your curriculum 1st semester senior year, take more AP classes, and do well on them. Have a good essay, LOR, and extracurricular activities. I think you can definitely get into all the CUNYs with your GPA and test scores, so those are safeties. NYU is impossible to be frank, but it’s worth a shot. Don’t worry about getting to good school. There are plenty, such as Hunter, and Stony, which you should qualify for if you have higher scores. But, I wouldn’t have too many expectations for any reach schools with a less than 40+ acceptance rate, but you never know. Good luck!

Do you think if I take 2-3 more APS next year and get a 1400+ on sat, my chances will increase a lot not really?

For SB, a lot depends on your desired major. If your goal is engineering or business, you need to have a strong math background (at least one year of calculus with As) to be considered for admission, otherwise you will have to start at a lesser college and try to transfer after you catch up - or reconsider the major. What is your intended major anyway? For liberal arts, a good SAT score gives you a decent chance. Without an SAT score this whole discussion is moot. Once you take the test, evaluate your options:

CCNY/Hunter are no safeties with their 30%ish admission rates, even with good scores, but they do accept a lot of transfers, so even if you start at another CUNY/SUNY, they will remain possibilities. Because these schools get so many applicants, it’s really a lottery, so consider all of your options. I know many people who went to the less-known publics and have enjoyed very successful careers. Try to do your best on SATs, talk to your guidance counselor about the schedule for next year, maybe take a couple of math/science courses at your local CC, and see what happens. To succeed in anything, you need to try first!
