Inasmuch as Rutgers presumably gets tons of applications, when deciding on admission, do they generally look at SAT cores and the applicant's overall GPA OR do they also look at the breakdown of the GPA ( i.e. which classes an applicant did well in; which classes he/she got a C in; which were honors / AP classes ) ? Thanks.

I think they look at the GPA above all, but also look into other factors such as Grade Trend,Course Curriculum,Rigor of Classes etc…I don’t think they will reject you for an occasional C or D as long as you have shown improvement but then again i’m not an adcomm. :(

Thanks hv. I guess, to an extent, the process is somewhat subjective…based upon who is reviewing the application.

It’s not subjective at Rutgers. In more selective schools, yes, but I think most state schools accept and reject based on a formula.

I do know that in California, many of the state colleges have an explicit formula which is kind of interesting… e.g. multiply one’s GPA by 800, add to that the sum of the 2 parts of the SAT ( or ACT )…if the total is over a certain amount, the applicants gains acceptance. Perhaps the large East coast universities have some type of “unofficial” formula.
