GPA blues

Hi,
with a profile like mine:
Work Experience: 3 yrs
GPA: 2.5 (From one of the top 15 colleges in India)
GMAT Score: 700
What kind of colleges is it possible to get into for an MBA.
Is there any thing I can do to improve my chances for admisssion.

I think most mba programs will take your interview and work experience into consideration so that may help you out. You can probably get your employer to write a great recommendation. Then, you need to explain why you aould be a better student now than you were as an undergraduate. Perhaps your low grades came in classes that had nothing to do with your major and you had a 3.5 in your major... you can probably find some positive way to portray your performance. Good luck.

If you can find a college that will let you take MBA classes as a "special" (non-degree) student, take one or two of them, do well, and then apply to be a degree student. If the college sees that you can do well in their MBA classes, it will probably be more willing to overlook a low undergrad GPA.

Thank u for the reply bessie.
In my grad i did better in classes which were not part of my major (Electronics Eng). the classes i did well in were Economics, Organizational behavior, Intellecual Property Rights etc. In these i had grades in the range of 3.5 to even 4 in some.
As for my job i am doing prety well as i have been to sent to Japan as a Business Consultant within a year at my job and hav recently recieved award recognizing my cintribution to the organization.
Can you please let me know how if being better at subjects related to business studies will be abonus even if i didn't do gr8 at my major.

Hi jessiehl can you give me some more info on taking classes as a special student. As in how do i go about getting this.

Wanna bet you have a 75%+ chance you get in top 16-30 MBA's and with a 700 GMAT, some even offer you aid.

I don't like your chances at top 30 schools. Given the high number of applicants from India, and business schools' desire for diversity, you will not have an easy path. Your GMAT is probably around average for students from India and your GPA is horrible. You would have to do a great sales job on your work experience but with only 3 years of experience that could prove tough, IMO.

I think a school like Texas A & M, with an average GMAT of 640 would cream themselves to admit someone with a 700+GMAT and good work experience. That's a half a standard deviation above their average. If I were you, I would work your strength and apply to the highest ranked schools with the lowest GMAT scores (Wisconson, Texas A&M, etc...).

Wisconsin and Texas A&M would both be excellent options if you can get in (which is very hard for me to say).

Thanks tom for the info its v useful.

hi victor,
my Gmat score is above average for an Indian student. The average is somewhere around 620-650 range.
My work ex is above average but my GPA is below average as u correctly stated

I mean, I think the crucial question is: what exactly is your work experience? "Business consultant" is a very vague title and could mean anything from "basically unemployed" to "management overhaul in failing US-based firms."

hi mike,
the organization i work for got an outsourcing project from the Japanese client. this was a Test Automation project
For this i had to go to Japan for preliminary discussions on the framework to be followed for the project. How to optimize the design (of the framework to be used) so that the final automation software would be maintainable and efficient.

So it's basically on the technical side of things, not management?
