I was reading with interest AwesomeOpossum's post on how Pitt calculates GPA's. I am addressing this question to anyone who might know or have input. Our school does not assign letter grades but percentages so I am trying to figure out on a 4.0 scale what my son's GPA would be. I am wondering how Pitt would interpret 93% for example on a transcript as a final grade. At our school that is considered a B...but I read that most universities interpret that as an A. This would make a big difference in his GPA and why I am asking. Can you shed any light on this? Also, are you saying that Pitt only considers the unweighted GPA?

Here is the comparison between percent (out of 100) and a GPA out of 4.0 at Pitt.

And yes, Pitt will only look at the unweighted GPA.

^^The chart you are referencing looks like it is for the graduate program.

Here is a link - it is University of Pittsburgh- Greensburg, but it states they use weighted GPA.

Yeah, but it’s the same for undergrad.

It’s generally assumed/said that most colleges use the unweighted GPA. I think Pitt Main would be the same. The branch campuses are generally (not always!) for lesser academic-caliber students who are not up to standards of Pitt Main, or who need a year/two at a branch school before transferring.

@Sheriff - my daughter’s guidance counselor told me they have to report how the high school calcultes the GPA since all high school’s are not the same. The college will then use their calculation to make all schools “equal”. This does seem to make sense…so I wouldn’t worry too much that your child’s school has a harder grading scale than other high schools.

@Opposum - do you know this for a fact? I would think that they would calculate using weighted - to take into account the harder courses. If the branch campuses do this, I would think it would be standard throughout the Pitt system.

No. They do unweighted, but that’s why they look at the rigor of your curriculum. Plus the weighted GPAs aren’t fair either. My HS had honor’s classes as a standard: no extra GPA weight. APs only got +0.5 and Post-APs +0.25. Other schools do +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP, so it hardly signifies. Plus other places say 90 is an A, 93 is an A, etc.

I’m pretty certain the standard would be UW GPA + rigor of classes. That’s why they emphasize the rigor part so much.
