Hi! I'm applying for colleges now but I am confused regarding my gpa. My state is weird and does not have a number gpa or does not have +/- it is just A B C D F. As a result how will colleges calculate my gpa. What is their system I've been looking online but can't find anything. What so they do for AP classes, etc? So confused. Someone please help!

<a href=“How to Convert (Calculate) Your GPA to a 4.0 Scale – BigFuture”>College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools;

If the college uses the 4 point system which is pretty much all of them, they will use the above conversions. I just wanted to add this. You shouldn’t have to worry because all of the colleges want an accurate representation of who they are looking at. If the 4 point GPA isn’t given they will calculate it themselves and have systems with witch to do that. For example, Purdue has a computer system that knows what scale each high school uses and converts it or it will calculate it new based on the transcript.

^^ok I was just wondering because even the college board link ou posted has a+ and a- and stuff like that…but my school doesn’t so plus/minus

If your school just shoes a letter grade, it will be converted 4.0, 3.0, etc. Different colleges reweight AP’s differently, if they reweight them at all. That’s out of your control, so don’t worry about it.

Colleges look at your high school profile to tell them about the grading system at your high school. Have you looked at your high school’s profile? Here’s a sample of one profile to see what I mean: http://www.bls.org/ourpages/auto/2013/5/24/55204166/2013-14%20BLS%20Profile.pdf. For Boston Latin students, colleges will use their grading scale – not the one at your high school or at my kids high school or the one on the College Board’s website. Admissions Offices do this all the time, so it’s not confusing to them. They make adjustments from high school to high school and use whatever GPA’s they are given and then translate from there. There isn’t a one size fits all method.

@gibby so basically just go by what my high school does??? Like Ik for some colleges like uga they have their own system for calculating

When did what I consider the standard grading system (ABCDF) become the odd man out?

Yes. Some colleges do not recalculate at all. And the colleges that do, have their own institutional ways of recalculating, so it’s a waste of time trying to guess what a college does. Students should use and report whatever GPA is listed on their transcript!
