GPA Calculations

I'm getting a little confused over the GPA System here.
My Report Card states that my GPA is 4.5 while my GPI is 5.
What do colleges actually consider GPI/GPA? And how is a rank of 28/500?
Also i've heard about weighted and unweighted GPA, What's that?
And does that infulence my final GPA in anyway.
Thanks

OK well Unweighted is, atleast i believe it, when they calculate the gpa and treat ap and honors like a regular class
now i ask what is a GPI?

is it true that a 3.4 in a public school is the same as a 4.0 in a private school? i heard thats how competitive schools will weigh gpas for private vs. public schools

I've never heard anything like that...I think that's probably just a crazy rumor/myth that you heard; sorry. While grade inflation may be more prevalent in private schools, i don't believe it is quite that large

who are you saying that too bulldogbull?

uhhhhhh i think it would be the opposite.

it is generally easier to get good grades in public schools rather than private.

more grade inflation in public.

Fine. Point taken. But that goes even more to my point that a 3.4 at a public school is not the equivalent of a 4.0 at a private...

maybe, but a 3.7/8 at a distinguished prep academy would most likely be viewed as the same as a 4.0 in a regular public school.

oh sorry i mixed it up. its a 3.4 in a private school is the same as a 4.0 in a private school

in some places maybe but not where i go

Does all of this mean that if people use the unweighted GPA system then a person in regular classes would have the same GPA as me? If thats the case then why do people opt for Honors classes?
By the way GPI is Grade Point Index it's use to calculate Class Rank at our school.
Also, what else can you do to get ino a better college besides extracuriculars and honors classes?
