GPA Comparison at State Us: Does it mean much??

Peterson’s reports the average GPA for schools that provide it. Unfortunately, a lot of schools do not, eg, 15 of the USNWR Top 20 national universities and 15 of the USNWR Top 20 LACs don’t. One group of colleges, however, mostly does report its average GPA-the State Us.

I looked at all of the 33 State Us ranked in the USNWR Top 75. Twenty-six of those thirty-three public colleges provided an average GPA.

Below are the numbers for the public universities ranked in the USNWR Top 75 (clearly a few schools reported weighted GPAs).

All it means is that the average is higher at some places than it is at others.

i wouldn’t read into it at all, each of the schools calculates and publishes a weighted GPA on different scales. If one school appears that it has a higher GPA than another, it doesnt mean the students are stronger or the school is more selective. Case in point: Clemson higher than Michigan. Also, if they were all on the same scale, UNC wouldn’t be so drastically different than the other schools (in fact, It’d probably be below several)

I know that Michigan at least recalculates GPAs to be unweighted and only include core classes.

Yeah Michigan is a SOB to try and get into.

Is anyone else frightened by UVA reporting a GPA (that’s obviously weighted) of 4.09? My weighted GPA was better than that. Seriously if UVA was going to count the weighted GPA I would have expected it to at least match UNC’s…
