Gpa converting... international student

Hi this is my first post on CC!!!
Do you guys happen to know how to convert NZ standard grading to grading in the us (GPA)?

Thanks!

You can try this converter to get a ballpark idea, but don’t try to do the conversions yourself for your application- let the universities you apply to do it (note that some will ask you to have the conversions done by specific organizations- if so, they will say it on their website)

NZQA can calculate this for you this. I guess this will only be for Year 12 results. Then you school can estimate based on this if you feel you are on target for a better result in Year 13.

Thank you very much for the answers!

@anon73469143, in the case of my kid’s GPA, we were asked by the US school to find an accredited foreign credential evaluation agency to do the conversion, including course by course evaluation and the resulting GPA. This would entail sending your original transcript certified by your school to the said organization. A report will be issued and sent to the said school while original transcript will be returned to you. It is a bit costly but it will be worth it. For the other schools that my kid was applying, it was not needed. I guess they already have plenty of such students that the schools probably know the standard, curriculum and grade conversion including resulting GPA. Hope this helps.

Thank you! That was very helpful!

FWIW: DO NOT convert your grades, or pay to have a foreign credentialing agency do the conversion. Admissions Officers are EXPERTS on the schools they cover, including those in other countries such as NZ. It’s the AO’s job to understand the educational system and grading rubrics of each international country they cover. Unless your transcript is in a language other than English, most US colleges request that students submit their transcript as-is and do not attempt to convert grades to a US GPA.

In addition, many US colleges re-calcuale a student’s GPA using their own institutional formula. For example, many US colleges will re-calucalte a GPA using the core subjects of Math, Science, Social Studies (History), Foreign Language and Creative Writing (what we call English class here in the US) and toss out subjects such as physical education, chorus, band, drama, woodworking, art, health etc.
