I graduated from a college in India and the GPA standards at my school were much more rigorous than even top US colleges. My school (IIT) awarded GPA out of 10, but even topper had a score of 9.2/10.0, with barely quarter of the class scoring above 8.0. So a pro-rated conversion to GPA from 10.0 to 4.0 is not an accurate reflection.

A b-school, if it (such as columbia business) specifies conversion rules for foreign institution, simply uses a pro-rated system of conversion.

Can someone please provide input, may be based upon their experience, on how to convert GPA from IIT (different IITs too have different levels of leniency, resulting in high gpas at some iits vs others)?
