To fellow WashU students....

Hi, I'm new to CC but it seems like a really good way to get feedback/advice. I know I'm probably going to sound like one of those people who complain about their GPA and how hard the school is but I would really appreciate some help...

I am an eng major and am struggling tremendously in classes. I have a GPA higher than 3.1, but it's not great, and definitely not at all where I want it to be...I go to class, take notes, go to help sessions and office hours, read the book ,do the problems, but I've never really been a good test taker - when there is the pressure of time, memorization sort of fails me, or I tend to over think things. I've talked to advisors, profs, and friends....

Can anyone suggest study methods or strategies I can try?

Please and thanks!

New parent here - so don’t really know much. But have you tried the Cornerstone program? Sounds promising from its description.

I was thinking about Cornerstone too. Also, reading materials in advance of the class is a good strategy. You don’t have to to read far in advance. The night before the class, read the the part that will be covered. Then, when you’re done with the class, go over it the same day. That helps retained a lot of what you learn in class. It sounds like a lot of work this way, but it is not. I worked for me way back when.

taking as many practice tests as possible, even in unrelated areas, may improve your test taking skills. a little like the winner of a football game, the preparation means everything. the pyramid effect of increased competition as you advance from high school may be at play. it is already kicking my son in HS where there are 1000 kids in each class. 3.1 may be better than you realize. I know that Engineering as a major is known for tough grading in general in the USA. (fwiw, not a student)

It might help if you list the things you already do.

Go to Chris in ESS and get tutors for your classes.
Seriously. It’s a tremendous resource for engineering students that (imo) not enough people take advantage of.

Johnson181, are there tutors available for upper class ESE classes? I think I will check this out. I know that cornerstone offers math and physics, but I’ve taken those classes already. I can’t find any upper level courses/tutors there. Thank you for the suggestions!

I know for a fact that there are tutors for many upper level ESE, especially a handful for 441. If Chris doesn’t have someone, he’ll look up old course lists and do his best to try to find someone.

Which ese courses? Maybe I could help?

Ese 260, 330, 434?

260 and 330 definitely have tutors. 434 is a very straightforward class - if you put the effort into the (not very difficult homeworks), the tests are quite simple.
