<p>How do they decide who they are going to accept or not? In some of the previous terms it has been like 20 accepted 19 denied etc. but why is there such a great variation?</p>

You be thinking that a 3.0 is such a low GPA requirement, but in reality its a “medium difficulty” to attain at UT, especially if you are in another Engineering major.</p>
<p>You have to internally transfer if you want to switch engineering majors? What major are you by the way? I’m thinking about transferring from McCombs and would like to ask a petro-engineering major some questions.</p>

<p>Are you asking like for example transferring from mechanical to chemical engineering? Or transferring from mccombs to cockrell? Because I believe they use different criteria.</p>
<p>I’m pretty sure it is much easier to change majors within cockrell than it would be to go from mccombs to cockrell</p>
<p>I agree with sketchedout. It’s easier for Cockrell students to switch within major than it is for McCombs students to get into Cockrell. I’m a ChemE by the way.</p>

<p>People already in engineering do NOT have any better of a chance than people in different majors. They ONLY look at TWO factors. UT GPA and UT basic sequence GPA. </p>
<p>The number of spots vary from year to year depending on how many freshman come in, how many people transfer out of the major, ect.</p>
<p>If the cutoffs for some of the departments seems relatively attainable, why are there so many people getting rejected? Like civil for instance, it says the GPA cutoff for spring 2011 was a 3.1, and yet only 8 students were accepted and 32 rejected. So what was the GPA needed to be accepted or do they look at other factors?</p>
<p>If only 8 ppl got in it seems like one would need like a 3.9 to gain admittance :(</p>

<p>yes sketchedout, I believe that is true. An engineering advisor told me it takes around a 3.8 to get into cockrell through an internal transfer.</p>
<p>However they don’t care about essays, but they will also choose who gets in based on how much of the basic sequence you have done. I.E. calc sequence, diff eq., eng physics, both chems, and then different classes depending on your major. For petroleum engineering it includes GEO416K; sed rocks, which I hear is very difficult and PGE courses as well.</p>
