GPA for summer research programs/internships?

I'm a freshman at UPenn and my GPA is 3.45, with only one semester of grades. I somewhat want to apply for a summer research program in neuroscience (that fits my interests very well, but takes place probably every year), or maybe ask a professor to work in his/her lab, but I wonder if my GPA is high enough for likely acceptance. On the other hand, I might take summer classes (probably need to because I'm doing a dual-degree) and wait until next year to try to do research, when I get my GPA higher.

Does anyone know how acceptable a 3.45 GPA is?
