I'm planning on enrolling in a top graduate school and I know I will have a problem when it comes to universities asking me what my cumulative GPA is, as, you see, I've attended 4 universities, all with a varying amount of units:

Moorpark College: 3.87GPA (90 something semester units)
Valley College: 4.0 GPA (4 semester units)
UCLA (degree in progress): 3.4GPA (45 quarter units)
Hebrew University of Jerusalem (year abroad in progress): 3.76GPA (42 quarter units)

I'll be getting my B.A. degree in M.E. and N. African Studies from UCLA..and I'm currently worried about my UCLA GPA (I have one year to bring it up, but one of the main reasons why I don't think i'll be attending grad school right after graduation is because I want my full year GPA represented into my cumulative)...

Does anyone know how one should figure in multiple GPAs into the application?

The most important thing is your GPA within the field you want to study in (and related coursework). Therefore, you may be better off calculating your GPA in courses in your field, rather than your overall cumulative GPA.

It is still confusing, as I would still have to factor in GPAs from all 4 schools. I have taken classes in my field of study at all of those universities–the majority of them not even from my degree-granting uni!

Aren’t they all 4.0 systems? Why not just add up total points and divide by total credit hours? ie, an A in a 3.0 credit hour class is worth 12 points, regardless of institution.

Hebrew U is a 4.0 system, but the grading system is different…where an A is as low as an 88%…and a B+ an 82%…

But…New_User…when unis ask for your GPA are they asking for all the universities attended averaged together or are they looking for major relevent material or are they looking for just the degree-granting uni?

when you actually fill out the application online, they will ask you to fill out each school attended and the gpa for that school individually. furthermore, they will request transcripts be sent from all institutions attended.

Lee makes a great point that I overlooked. Of course you will list all uni’s individually with respective GPA’s on the app. Occasionally they will ask a general cumulative GPA (in which case I would average all universities attended together) and often when they ask this (in my experience) they also ask for a major (ie “Science”) GPA. In my opinion that question is kind of a crap shoot and they can get the relevant info they really want from the transcripts. I mean, what really constitutes your “Science” GPA? Do you include Calc? Psychology? What about Physiological Psychology that is really mostly neurobiology? See what I mean? For these schools I just came up with the best number I could and sent in my transcripts. Seemed to work out ok for me. Good luck!
