I'm a junior and African American Instate. My GPA is a 3.714 uw 4.21w cummalitive and i have pretty good EC's...school doesn't rank...and lets say i got like a 2000 on my SAT thanks!

...All honors and AP classes also..(some classes only offer honors and not AP)

I have to say that those stats would seem to get you there - but considering the array of decisions for the kids at my school - I still believe there is an x factor that GPA and SAT's doesn't cover. We had one kid deferred to spring who had better stats than I - and another who is consistently drawing the reaction "You? You got into Fall? How did YOU do that?" Embarassing I know. I attribute my entry to good stats - not great - but awesome recommendations (the ad com actually told me that) - consistency in my EC's - I did things I loved and stuck with them - and leadership - I stepped up to take on leadership opportunities whenever I could - and community service - my school requires community service - but again - I found something I loved - that was consistent with my interests and career aspirations - and stuck with it.

For me - getting into Maryland was as much about what was in my heart as what I achieved on paper - and I think my essays refelcted that as well - I spent a LOT of time on them to make sure they conveyed who I was and again were consistent with my interests and career aspirations.

I think Maryland is looking for students who can hang in there and succeed and who have something to offer as part of the community.

Maybe that's why Ms. Dumb as a Box of Rocks got in - and Ms. Better Than My Stats didn't - who knows?

The best advice is - work hard in your studies - get involved and stay engaged with things you love - prepare yourself for the SAT's as best you can (I never took a class or anything - but did play with a software package from Kaplan). Start thinking about your essays and your strategy for getting good recommendations - and finally relax and enjoy your senior year high school - lotsa fun to be had - and it speeds by!

I'm sure a lot of entry to university of maryland is a crapshoot, but if I could get into Maryland you should be fine with those stats.

For one, I'm out of state, which makes Maryland much harder to get into. You're in-state. Secondly, you're African-American, which will probably make Maryland a little easier to get into. And your GPA is probably higher than mine. I'm not really sure how to calculate it but my high school GPA was roughly an 89.

The factors that probably got me into Maryland were my SAT (2020), great recommendations, and just a balanced profile that while not particularly special but wasn't weak in any area. I also got a score of 5 on an AP European History Exam and an A- at an NYU summer course in Sociology, but that probably only helped a little.

You should be fine. I actually have a girl in my class who got deferred to srping.. I dunno if her stats are better than mine (I do know I got higher SAT than her), but she's in lots of AP and GT courses and an officer of NHS, she works and plays sports, she's on SGA... and I'm not on any of those things and I got in for Fall!

Maryland's really weird about who they pick.

i think people who ask if their stats are good enough won't get an honest answer. you really can't tell. like the other people who commented above, there were a lot of upsets at my school--people with solid grades/SAT's/ec's didn't get in.

you can join as many clubs as you want and participate in many leadership positions-- but always remember to somehow show that all those contribute to your aspirations in some way. link 'em!
