Hi there!
Okay so I am currently a freshman in high school, and I recently took my final exams. I checked my grades, and they are as follows: Civics - A+, Gym - A, Rigorous English - A, Band - A, Spanish 4 - A, Biophysical science - B (0.2 away from a B+, but the teacher will not round up), and Geometry - B. My English, Spanish, and Biophysical science are all honors classes (as they are advanced curriculum), however, for some reason, our school does not weight them any differently. I checked my GPA, and I got a 3.7. I am personally not really satisfied (I could have tried harder), but I have a few questions. The first one is, is this a “good” GPA for a freshman in first semester? Second, what is the “normal” or “average” GPA of a 9th grader? And third, will colleges look at this? Or will they also look at my extracurricular activities as well? I am involved Model UN, Youth in Government, and a few others.
Thanks!
What is the highest possible GPA? Is it 4.0 or 4.3 (because of the A+ grade)?
I think it’s fine, although you should try to get fewer Bs in the future if you’re looking at really selective colleges.
It’s hard to say because every high school has a different way of computing GPA. Even if you recalculate GPA, it’s hard to compare students across schools because some schools have harder classes than others. If your high school calculates class rank, that would give you an idea of where you stand within your own school.
They will look at your grades and course rigor in the context of your school. They also commonly look at SAT/ACT scores, extracurriculars (not limited to school clubs), recommendation letters, essays, demonstrated interest, etc.
Okay no one in our school can get higher than a 4.0 because it is an unweighted (for honors and AP classes, and an A+ is unweighted). And apparently I have a B+ so now I have a 3.8
