Alright guys now that I'm finally looking over colleges I'm worrying about my GPA.

I'm just finishing sophomore year so I have 2 years to go. I have about a 3.2 unweighted and about a 3.6 weighted for freshman and sophomore year.... I'll have taken 6 APs by the time I graduate so my weighted is much higher.

I did very well on my PSAT for my age, and will probably be a national merit qualifier next year if I can improve a little on it. My guidence consuler said that I would probably shooting at around a 1350 if I was to take the SAT now as a sophomore. So I'm hoping for a 1400+ as a Junior.

Hahah back to GPA, I'm just worried that my GPA will bring me down alot. What do you think? (I have sports, extracurriculars, and community service also)

The schools I'm interested in are USC, Miami, UCLA, Northwestern, UVA, Northeastern, etc... And yes I know I'm probably reach to high, but why not try!

Well, your instincts were right–your GPA will definitely be a problem. Everyone has extracurriculars and community service, and while your SAT score (let’s say you score a 2100) will give you an advantage to Miami, USC, UCLA, and Northeastern, it won’t make up for a low GPA.

Work really hard next year. Most people at Miami, USC, UCLA, and UVA will have around a 3.7 UW GPA, and most at Northwestern will have 4.0. Northeastern is not really that selective, so you’ll get in there no problem. Northwestern, on the other hand, is very, very selective. . . like might-as-well-be-Ivy selective.

I suspect that you do homework, but just. You do not study ahead that much for tests, and probably drop the ball sometimes and forget assignments or turn them in late. So your GPA lags behind those of the kids who are detail oriented about their studies, study a little bit per day for finals starting six weeks early, etc. You could probably improve the GPA just by resolving to go after every point. It’s just a mind set. You have the ability, but might be losing points here and there.

Unless you are applying for a tough major to get into, I think that U of Miami, Northeastern will be solid match schools (especially coming from a top 10 hs).

Yeah I believe those would be a good match also. Do you have any suggestions for similar schools that could be a match?

Also, I don’t know if colleges care, but foreign language has really brought my GPA down. In 9th and 10th grade I recieved my only Cs ever which were in French. Now that I have finished my 3 years of language I feel that I will be able to bring up my GPA to around a 3.7 for Junior year.

You have so so many options! I don’t know what type of school you’d like, what you are looking for, what you might major in, or are you undecided? You have just so many options. Your stats are very good. Don’t pay too much attention to this site. You start to think that everyone has a 4.5 and 2100+ SAT score. You are quite a bit above average, and you come from an outstanding hs. Still, schools like Northwestern, USC, UVA will be reach schools. Don’t worry about it, you can find lots of wonderful match and safety schools too.

Just editing. You should think about whether you want a big school, location, sports important, do you want small classes with nurturing professors (ie: LACs-not on your list right now), do you like cold or warm weather, are both coasts okay (both are on the list)-consider the trip home if Thanksgiving is important. Is FA or merit aid important. If so, you need to spend time researching what merit aid you might be able to get with your stats, and how much FA you qualify for. So many questions need to be answered. These Qs are just a few you might ask. I am sure that you can come up with some must haves, not so important, and questions you’d like answered when searching. For example, perhaps a religious organization is important, or perhaps you want free music lessons, someone else would like to have a particular club sport.

Thanks alot northeastmom. I’m not positive about size, all I know is I want something that isn’t massive like UF, but isn’t tiny like New College..

I enjoy being near the beach, so I would like to go somewhere that is semi close to a beach, and I don’t really mind which coast. Also, I would like there to be sports, and a popular greek system.

My idea for a major is always changing but it is always between Political Science, Film, Business, or Law. Hahha pretty broad I know but at least there is some idea..

Law is not a major for undergrads. Prelaw is not a major, btw. If you want to go to law school after undergraduate, just talk to your advisor, but I believe that you can major in anything. I know of someone who was a pharmacist and then went to law school.

As I read the description of what you like, 2 schools came to mind. East Carolina U. (should be a low match/safety I think), and UNC-Wilmington (match-high/match). I have been to UNC-W, but not East Carolina. I know that the University of Rhode Island has what you might be looking for, but I think that other than for marine bio or pharmacy, it would also be a low match/safety school. I can’t think of other medium/large schools near the beach, LOL. I am sure that people from the west coast can suggest schools there.

It really doesn’t have to be near the beach.

I’m really up for anywhere that has a beautiful campus, happy students, greek scene, open minded people, and is in or is close to a cool city/town.

Freshman- 2.9 (lets not talk about it haha) GPA
Sophomore-3.5 GPA

Maybe with a 4.0 next year and senior year I could be applying to some good schools that don’t take freshman GPA. I know you may think that is stupid, but I’m going to get at least a 3.5 as a Junior, and am shooting for a 1400+ on SATs maybe even 1500.

Sorry, but I can’t comment about UGA because I am not familiar with it. If you want to be near a nice town/city with the same requirements you listed in your earlier post, you also might want to look into American University, Fordham, and Manhattan College, but you need to look into the Greek scene. The College of New Jersey probably isn’t too far from Philadelphia and is a good school. I can’t tell you about the Greek life. Some students like Drexel because of their coop program.

If you want sports and Greek life, and are less concerned about being near a city, you could check out Virginia Tech (might be too big, but that is up to you) and James Madison Univesity. UNC-W is similar to JMU, but smaller and near the beach. You might want to look into Rutgers, and UConn too, but they are big schools. I don’t know how you feel about large schools, because UGA has over 25k undergrads, and I thought that you did not want a school that big.

I was just curious about UGA because although huge, it is in an awesome town (i love live music), good sports, i’m sure a fun social life, and a greek scene. Seems almost comparable to UVA to me…
