hey guys, im currentley a junior. My freshman gpa was a 3.0 my sophomore was also a 3.0 however my junior year, so far its only 1st semester, but i have a 3.9.
Im taking my SATs in June. I have been on the track team for the past 3 years, i am a football manager, in SGA (Student Government Association), in the minority students group, college partnership program, member of S.T.O.M.P. against cancer, volunteer at a daycare center and am involved in my Church's youth group.
I am interested in the following:
UVA
UNC
Georgetown
Duke
VTech
and
UPenn.
Please tell me honestley what chances I have of getting in, and what I should do in order to raise my chances (SAT and such).

YOUR CHECKLIST

Finish your junior year out with all A’s.
Study for SAT’s (get 2200 as benchmark)
Get all A’s your senior year
Maintain EC’s

*It’s unpredictable and this is only suggested, but if you have an upward trend and high test scores you’ll have a higher chance at being accepted.

Good Luck. I’m on the same boat

I’m guessing you’re a URM. If yes, your chances are better than if not. Some schools ignore freshman grades–can’t recall which on your list–sorry. It would help to find those types of schools. Also, an upward trend is always good. You should check the Common Data Sets for those and other schools you are interested in to get an idea of typical stats. Do well on the SAT or ACT and put a few safeties on that list. Almost all of the ones you have are tough to get in to.

Continue working on your grades, your EC and SATs… but don’t forget that most of these schools are used to perfect grade students, and they will not have space, nor do they want to accept all straight A-students…

Grades and overall performance are of course very, very important, but if you want to have a more realistic shot at some of these schools, do something out of the ordinary. Your EC all seem very solid and interesting, but (and I don’t know if something like this even would be an option for you or not) try to do something you would never think of doing… may it be backpacking somewhere exotic on your own or attempt a sport which until now has intimidated you… Who knows, it might even turn out to be really good essay material… If you somehow can prove to these schools that you are not only “book-smart” (like the majority of their applicants), but also “street-smart” you are doing yourself a huge favor…

Your ECs aren’t particularly compelling, but that’s not the most important part of your app. We need your SATs to really chance you.

thanks everybody…
