more specifically, do colleges like harvard, cornell, and the rest of the ivy league recalculate?

if so, is there a list of those that dont and/or do that I can use?

thanx a lot!

I don't have a list with me...But most colleges do recalculate GPA, including the Ivies.

are you sure the ivies recalculate? hehe, man, i wanna be a ghazillion % sure, and i feel like a jackass right now

I'm quite sure. If you are worried about recalculating to the right scale (if you have a 7-point scale at your school or something) or to include APs, make sure your guidance counselor informs the university on that school information sheet s/he is supposed to provide that classes and grades are weighted differently. The truth is that there are so many different grading systems that colleges have no choice but to recalculate to make the applicants comparable.

my school calculates on a 4.0 scale, basically, they take the average of all my grades, so for instance, an A is = 4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3 etc etc

so if i have 5A's and 5B's, my GPA is 3.65

but my school has messed up, i have 8A's, 5A-'s, and 2B+'s, which should come to 3.8, which they say is a 3.4 ... AAAHHH!!!!@#, which means im scared

(all the grades used in calculating my high school GPA are only full credit courses (science, math, language etc etc))

Okay, if on your transcript it says that you have a certain number of As in a certain number of courses, and you believe the GPA is miscalculated, you should include that information somewhere in your app. Colleges normally recalculate though anyway. Your grading scale is already different than mine, I can see, though they are both 4.0 scales.

Here is mine:
A+/A/A- = 4
B+/B/B- = 3
etc.

Already you can see that they would have to recalculate to make ours match.

yes, thanx, makes me feel a bit better, :)

confused by this - how do they recalculate them. Do they use a numeric scale?

stanford calculates on a straight 4.0 scale, disregarding +/-. So a 4.0 would be A-/A+/As, 3.0 would be B-/B+/Bs, etc. they only count the core disciplines (history, math, science, english, foreign language)

(i emailed them and they told me that)

yes, i second that ^ i emailed stanford, i emailed some other colleges too, when they reply i can post up what they do for GPA calculation

hi, i got an email from cornell, harvard, brown, none of them recalculate GPA. they apparently look at core subjects only ...

Why dont colleges care about + and -.
