GPA low but

Hi, I'm a junior from a competitive high school with a 3.5 GPA, a 2370 SAT and a 34 ACT. my class rank is top 12% in a class of 788.
ECs include:
EIC of newspaper,
vice of Journalism Honor Society,
Historian of National Honor Society,
founding president of comedy sportz club,
founding officer of Mock Trial team at our school,
vice president and two time state qualifier in debate,
founding officer (vice president) of the destination imagination club at our school (we're going to globals)
and a member in key club, comsci club, FCA, and environmental club.
I've also won many notable awards in journalism and competed at the regional UIL competition twice, and will be attending the Medill Cherubs program this summer.
I know that my gpa isn't stellar but... idk. Chance me please?

Will you apply to Medill?

OP

As you state a 3.5 is rather low for NU. However, there are other parts of your application that are strong and might make up for this. Given the totallity of your credentials, I would recommend that you apply. If NU is your first choice, consider ED strogly. However, with a overall acceptance rate of 16% it’s hard to say that ANYONE has a really good chance statistically.

Hope this is helpful.

I really think it is all about chance. My SAT scores were “low” and according to the standards of you guys, my junior year GPA was “low” and my senior year GPA was even “lower.” Besides a 740 on ONE subject test, my SAT subject tests were “low.” Yeah, I sent in my 590 biology score. I really think what shot me over the top into acceptance was how I explained, in my supplemental, HOW Northwestern would make me a better student and smarter, overall. So yeah, spend time on your supplemental essays, make sure they are both smooth and articulate. They always pick a few applicants with lopsided stats (I counted three CCers with SAT scores in the 1900 range this year, including me).

OP-
while your GPA is underwhelming, your test scores are very strong. Your ECs are good too. You will be a very competitive applicant if you go RD; you will be a “likely” admit if you go ED. Good luck!

turkgirl-
You were undoubtedly among a small group of people with your “numbers” who were accepted; I suspect because there were aspects to your personal story and “voice” that made you an interesting addition to the class. I doubt very much that you would have been accepted if you were just another upper middle class white kid from an overrepresented geographic aread (e.g., NYC, LA, etc.). You were undoubtedly an out-of-the-ordinary applicant, with unusual and interesting elements to your background.

@WCASParent, yes, while I do have unusual circumstances, the other 2 CCers with lopsided stats DID not. They always accept a few not-so-overachievers to add diversity. And while I am not in the upper middle class income bracket, I did go to a middle class high school were all my friends overachieved, and I currently go to a private high school were people get Mercedes Benz as a car for birthdays and take taxis to school…so I’ve had the opportunities.
