Hi.
I'm a ninth grader right now, and I got into an AP Music theory class.
Is it a better idea to take the AP music theory class, or is it better to just work on my GPA and do AP classes in sophmore/junior year or something?
Which one would a boarding school admissions officer approve of?

yeah that is also what i am asking for.
a better GPA or more AP classes. Which weighs more?

Both. :) Sorry... welcome to CC. Take AP Music theory and do well in it.

better GPA... not being able to get a good grade in an AP perhaps means you're not ready to take it.

Do what you love with passion.

i havent played an instrument for a while now hahahah
i went to the office and canceled my schedule change,
and i told my teacher that I wasnt ready for the class :]
thanks anyway haha

oh btw, im not new to CC, i was here for 2 years,
just quiet for the last two monthes hahahah :P

yay pre march08 people are bakkk :D

but MUSIC THEORY ap??!?!?!
your school has some nice subjects lol (or did i just never hear of them even though they're in every school?)

ahahah we dont have a music theory course, but we have an ap music theory course.

ap music theory might not be that hard for you, Aspirant, especially if you have perfect pitch or relative pitch. I took the test so PM me if you have any questions.

Ouch, I've heard AP Music Theory takes a pick-axe to the GPA--unless you're a prodigy, which a surprising number of people at boarding school are, actually. But whatever, it's freshman year. Do those masochist classes before your grades in them actually matter... do NOT save them for Upper Year, like... oh, ME. :)

I never found music theory to be hard....just mind-numbingly boring. But maybe being a pianist helped. We are used to thinking harmonically. Is there sight-singing and ear-training on the AP as well as form and analysis?

There are many different levels of music theory.... the stuff on the AP exam...there are some stuff I'd never heard of before the test, but you don't need to know all of them to get a 5. I studied for an hour the night before the test and guessed through the MC and it was fine. There is sight singing, pitch/rhythm recognition parts. There are also harmonization parts, which I thought were the hardest. The hardest one is when play the bass pitches and you have to write it down, then realize the figured basses. Other than that though, the AP music test is actually fun (you get to listen to music!!). But I also have perfect pitch so I don't know how it is w/o it

Hmm I heard that our school's music theory class is really easy.
theres one more freshmen taking the class, and the rest are upperclassmen.
but yeah im just gonna concentrate on raising my gpa and stuff :]

the only test for getting into the class was to sing a song (pitch check) and tell her (the teacher) about my past music achievements.
however, i would have died during the AP test (finals) because i've only played on a treble clef for violin, and most of the students were pianists, so i would have been falling behind :P
