I am a graduating senior at a public high school of about 2000 students
I'm valedictorian of my class of about 400 students
My gpa is a 4.0 unweighted and 4.4 weighted
However, I took the ACT and got a 28 and the SAT and got a 1750.
I am a four year varsity volleyball player and captain of the track team
I volunteered a ton in local elections and can write a good entrance exam.
I will be applying to NYU, Cornell, Brown and other ivies
Will my low act/sat scores throw off my gpa?

In my research, I have found that colleges are more willing to forgive a lower test score if the GPA is solid, than they are willing to forgive a low GPA if the test score is solid. However, that does not mean colleges will simply disregard your test scores, just because your GPA is decent. And I’m afraid that a 28 for the schools you listed might be too low for them to overlook despite your GPA. It would be in your best interest to retake the ACT and try to score over a 30. Do you have zero chance with that test score? No. But very few applicants get into ivies with that kind of test score.

If you were good enough to play volleyball or do track at those schools, you’d be a lock, but given you’re a senior, you probably already looked at that option.

You definitely need a Plan B, and it’s really late to develop one. There are some decent schools with Jan 10, Jan 15, and even later application deadlines - make sure the schools you listed are not your only option, and the other schools you apply to are at least at the 25th percentiles with your ACT.

Wow totally disregarded the fact you are a senior. Sorry, my bad. Therefore, retaking the ACT is probably not an option for you.

In that case, MrMom’s suggestion for plan B is really the only option you have, so act quickly!

Maybe you should register late and retake the SAT.

Test scores can be overlooked, and you have a great track record otherwise, but I hope you had a safety on your list. Only applying to ivies is a bold, dicey move no matter how great your grades are. Best of luck.

Unless you can afford NYU, applying only to “NYU, Cornell, Brown and other ivies” with a 1750 on the SAT is a thoughtless choice. Even some people with grades and EC’s similar to yours and 2400 on the SAT get rejected every year from Ivy League schools. I also hope you have some safeties, and if you don’t, you could still apply to schools with a January 15 deadline.

And no, test scores can’t be overlooked, unless you cured Ebola or proved Riemann hypothesis. What are your SAT subject test scores?

I would look on those school’s websites or email them to see if they accept test scores for january(SAT) or Febuary(ACT) I know Duke said they’ll consider scores taken then and it can only help you. Retake if you can!

If you can raise those SAT/ACT scores, then do! The sports part will definitely help and your GPA is solid, so you should be good on those! Good Luck!
