My friend has his heart set on Ohio State, and thinks he will get in based on what his sisters (who both went to main campus) have told him.

He has a great GPA, about 3.7-3.8 unweighted, has taken AP classes, but has only received a 21 on the ACT. Obviously this is lower than the average, but he seems a bit reluctant to really put the work in to bring it up. He is Asian, and will be applying early decision in hopes of receiving a minority scholarship, though he’s said his family could make do without it as long as he gets in.

His sisters think that his GPA will outweigh his ACT and he will get in, though I am skeptical.

I think a 21 is dangerously low. I am pretty sure OSU’s average ACT is around 26-27 now. And for the minority scholarship, you need to have applied for acceptance, received an invitation to apply for the schoalrship, and finished the complete application (Morrill Scholarship) by December 1. You need at least a 23 on the ACT in order to qualify for the Morrill. He really needs to take the ACT again if there is time for acceptance; I don’t remember the cut off.

Middle 50% last year was 27-31, with an average of 27.8. 21 is really, dangerously low. GPA is good. In the eyes of OSU, however, gpa is looked at third after class rank and test scores.

Tell him that if he really wants to get into Ohio State, he’ll need to put the work in to up his ACT score.
