GPA problems

Hey guys! I moved in from another country and my A's were converted into B's and B's into C's etc... Because of this, my gpa naturally dropped a lot. I'm a Junior so only Freshman and Sophomore years were affected. I talked to my guidance counselor about this and he's trying to work on it but he says it's highly unlikely because of state regulations and such. I'm getting the same letter grades I used to get in my old school so I feel the grading systems were similar just had different grades given by percentage. Anyways, I got my ranking and I barely made it into the top 10% of my class (9.64% th). I was wondering if this ruins my chances of getting into competitive colleges because my "GPA" may not make their requirements (the schools I originally planned to go my GPA would most likely get me accepted.)

Depending on what type of colleges you are applying to, some may actually read and consider the “additional information” you provide on the Common App. This could be something to explain there. You could also bring it up in interviews, but not in a whiny way; maybe simply in the context of talking about having moved from abroad.

I may have to alter my college list but I really wanted to try and get in Rutgers 7 year med program and in some sense I already met 2/3 requirements. 1) be top 10% of class (check) 2) get 700+ in SAT math section (check) and 3) get 700+ in SAT CR so I hope I still have a chance.

You may have the minimum to get in the combined BS/MD program, but the competition is fierce for such program. If you go to the medical school forum section on cc and look up those 2014 acceptance stats, you will find most of
the admitted students have sterling GPA and SAT and they are either rank 1 or 2 in their HS. Please apply broadly and also to regular BS programs, so at the end you have some school to go to.

My friends’ S applied to all bs/md programs and flew all over to interview and did not get in ANY. It happens.

yeah i understand that… that’s why I’m worried about the gpa problem I’m going to apply to the normal one as a backup but I really want to be accepted into the 7 year. Do you by any chance know if they look at your weighted or unweighted gpa? If it’s weighted then I can increase my chances because I’m taking like 5 APs next year and 1 Honors

For top schools only unweighted Gpa counts
