GPA question (not a chance thread, a short answer is all i need)

Ok, I was wondering, or should I say making sure, that schools like Harvard, Yale, etc. recalculate your GPA. My high school does not go above a 4.0, even if you take ap, so will they just strip my score down to its unweighted and then weight it or what?

Thanks for the answer!

They usually look at UW GPA, rank, and your school report to weigh your academic success. You should not be hurt by your school’s particular method of calculating GPA.

^ I agree with the above unless your grades bringing your UW GPA up are not in the main subject areas (ie CAD CAM, programming, art, music, business, accounting, etc). As I understood from when my son went through the application process, the schools that recalculate not only use their scale of choice but also only use certain classes in the calculations.

do they look more at UW rank or weighted rank? My school reports both and my UW is going to not be in top 5% but my weighted will be top 2%

I believe weighted rank is more important, otherwise you’d be benefiting by taking all of the easiest classes.

I also have a question related to this. Do they input Freshman grades when they calculate your UW GPA? As of now, I have a 3.98 UW GPA 9-11 (Senior currently) with one B Freshman year. Will they ignore this B or do I stay at a 3.98 GPA?

GPA is for grades 9 - 12

Harvard Admissions will look at everything . . . everything. Weighted, unweighted, earlier test scores, random supplemental materials, etc. And they don’t plug it into a formula - they look at it, discuss it, argue over it. If your school does this or doesn’t do that, it won’t matter - they’ll look at it, fully aware of the variations in how different HSs report stats.
