GPA Question

I have a question in regards to how GPAs are typically calculated. On the 4 point scale (4 for every A, 3 for B's, 2 for C's), and unweighted, I have around a 3.8 or so GPA. However, when it's weighted, it's around 4.4 (5 for A's in weighted classes, 4 for B's, etc.). I have a question in regards to the common app though. When you list your GPA, you are supposed to put what scale the GPA is calculated in. For my weighted GPA, would I say the 4.4 is out of a 4.0 scale or a 5.0 scale (as 5.0 is the highest weighted GPA that would be possible on that scale)? I feel like saying a 5.0 scale would be right, though saying I had a 4.4 out of a possible 5.0 makes it sound lower than a 3.8-something out of 4.0.

Thanks for your input!

What’s it say on your transcript or the school profile? Are grades recorded on the 5.0 scale and YOU calculated it on a 4.0 or… Just remember any school to which you apply is getting a transcript and not just going on your say so. :)

Oh I’m sorry, I realize that sounds confusing. I guess what I’m asking is if a person’s GPA is 4.4, and the highest weighted GPA possible is 5.0 (as in all A’s, and every single class was weighted), does that mean that it’s calculated out of a 5.0? I’m sorry if that sounds incredibly obvious, but my schooling situation was a bit nontraditional.
