Hey Guys,

I applied regular decision to UIUC, so I'm waiting for my February 15th decision. I have a question about how UIUC looks at weighted GPA. I'm an OOS student from New Jersey. My high school doesn't rank, and it only provides a weighted GPA on my official transcript. My unweighted GPA is 3.88, and my weighted GPA is 4.37. I fear that my unweighted GPA would look much better than my weighted, because they would now that 3.88 is on a 4.0 scale. My weighted is on a 4.5 scale, but they don't know that.

How does the UIUC Admissions Office recalculate weighted GPA's? Should I be concerned?

Thanks.

What major did you put down that you plan to go into? I think your grades seem fine for getting into UIUC and you shouldn’t worry.

I’m applying to Computer Engineering, and my backup is Computer Science. My GPA is probably the best part about my resume. I took the ACT twice and got a 31 both times, but they superscore to form a 32 (35 English, 31 Math, 34 Reading, 26 Science). I know UIUC doesn’t superscore, but they evaluate the highest sub score from each section.

I’ve heard that Computer Engineering is one of the easier engineering majors to get into, so I’m pretty confident. Thank you very much for the response, Aerokid1491.

I could see it being easier to get into because it ECE has a pretty big department and thus can accommodate more students. However, do be prepared for some good competition due to all the kids who are ECE majors. If you can work as well as you did at your last school, you will be set!

Good luck for sure! I hope you can get in! I love being here and I am sure you will too!

So judging by my GPA and ACT score, do you guys think I can make it?

You’ll most likely get in. Your academic stats are up to UIUC standards. IF you did well on your personal statements and shown that you have life out of school as well (through extracurriculars, clubs, etc) then you have a good chance of getting accepted.

They do know what your weighted scale is. Not only because they have access to that, but also because 4.5 is a typical scale for weighted GPA marks. I think that your scores are very good and you have a nice chance at getting in.
