My junior S1 with top-brand-name-college aspirations claims that admissions officers look only at GPA attained while in high school, as opposed to high school courses taken in middle school.

The GPA on the HS transcript contain numbers of HS-level courses he took in grades 7 and 8, well before anyone realized how bad grade B is ! (jk). So UW GPA drops from 3.97 to 3.84 with the dismal MS performance.

I wonder if is reasonable to expect the admission officer, reading the 972th application at 1am has the physical/mental capacity to consider such nuances ?

It’s not something to worry about, but if I understand the question correctly then it sounds like those courses will still be taken into account (albeit with very little weight).

Considering they were taken during middle school it probably will have very little impact if any overall, but it will still be included. Any course that counts for high school credit will be considered as part of his high school performance, as indicated by the fact that they’re shown on his transcript.

I took H Alegbra 1 and H Geometry in 7th and 8th grade respectively and it showed up on my transcript, effecting my weighted GPA and rank. I’m pretty sure they were included in UW GPA calculations as well unless it’s one of those colleges that doesn’t even count 9th grade.

But if you mean whether admission officers will really care, it’s unlikely. 9th grade is the least important year and you can imagine what they’d think about classes taken in middle school. However, technically they’ll be included in the overall decision-making process
