say for applying to colleges and stuff you had one trimester of really bad grades (in freshman year, a C, D, 2 high A's), but then you pulled them all up and the end gpa was a 4.1 ..so would my grades in freshman yr matter?

If you apply to some colleges (i.e. Princeton and UC system) freshman grades are not looked at and the GPA is calculated from semesters 3-6 (ED) or 3-7 (RD).

Oh ivyhopeful I am in your situation as well! I have 2 D's in freshmen summer (before freshmen) but without counting that I will have a 3.95+ GPA uw. I know for a fact that UC only looks at your junior and sophomore grades, but how do privates look? Say, are they going to just look at the cumulative gpa my high school gives and disqualify me from further considerations (i have a 3.8 cumulative...)? or are they going to analyze the individual courses and do recalculations?

Some colleges will weight against it or not consider it if they see that the periods that count (sem 4-7) are exceptional compared to the rest of the schedule. Others as I said above don't even record it. Some will just include it.
And the summer before grade 9 should have no impact; it is still middle school.

also, admission officers look at "grade trends"-- they will notice that your grades went up and not penalize you for it/

They might penalize a student, but not as much as a downward grade trend, which is highly deleterious to one's chances.

I would say don't worry about it.

okay,,,, if i have low A's and high B's, can i be into an Ivy League School?

yes, as long as you give them a reason to chose you over the guys with straight a's

Yes you can, just have a hook, which can be fabricated from just about anything.
