GPA Question

What if some got a 1.0 GPA in the first semester of high scool in 9th grade, but after that gotten a 4.0 gpa in every semester of high school(inlcuding 2nd semestre of ninth grade year), and got a 2250 on the SAT. Plus, a killer essay and pretty good EC’s, does this person have a chance at University of Washington and Stanford? Also, what if that person completes an Associate Degree in Computer Science

I think you would! your overall GPA is still a higher 3 and colleges should see that there’s an obvious upward trend in your performance. I think at the very least you wouldn’t be an immediate scratch off at either university, but keep in mind that Stanford is Stanford. Good luck!

Your first thread says 4.0 for freshman year, no 1.0 mentioned. Is this a hypothetical?

That would make your GPA a 3.5. It’s unlikely, but maybe.

@bodangles no, my friend did this.

doesn’t stanford not look at freshman year gpa?

I honestly don’t think so. Isn’t that the equivalent of getting straight Ds for a whole year?
Your only saving grace would be if there was a good reason for this sudden shift in GPA. Were you going through an extremely hard time during freshman year?

@pineapple86 The 1.0 GPA is not the OP’s - OP says it’s of a friend (whether we believe it or not).

@johnishappylol Why do you want to know?

That person can contact the school and tell the officers about the reasons why he or she got a 1.0, and I think that the school will ignore the poor GPA if the reason is valid (e.g. death of a parent, depression, etc.). Many schools place greater weight on sophomore and junior year grades, so a 1.0 Freshman GPA, while not the greatest, will not completely kill an application if the student does well the rest of his high school career.

As for Stanford, they do look at freshman year, but they don’t really care about it as much compared to 10th, 11th, and 12th grade grades.

Ok, thanks. As to you, @MITer94 I want to know because I’m curious whether or not my friend might have a chance.
At least to University of Washington maybe?

@pineapple86 no, getting mostly D’s in only one semester. But in the second semester he got 4.0s

@johnishappylol IMO, having a 1.0 GPA freshman year, then 4.0 throughout doesn’t make sense. The only real scenarios I can see this happening are if your friend was really sick and couldn’t finish his classes, or if there was extreme hardship, or if he just didn’t care at all about HS.

He should check whether the schools he’s applying to places importance on freshman year grades. That is his job - not yours.

Hahaha your account is one of those theoretical ones. I used to do that with my old account until I learned better. You should learn better
