I have a question regarding GPA I go to a super competitive California school in Silicon Valley area where a 90% and better is 4.0. I mostly have all A-s, and it shows up as an A- on my transcript but my GPA is 3.76 because all my A-'s are considered 4.0. Same thing with B- and B+ both are 3.0. So my transcript says I have a 3.76 but if I use the 4.0 scale where a A- is a 3.7 my GPA is more like a lower 3.6. What I am mainly asking is will my GPA on my transcript be the only one colleges use or will they recalculate it which would hurt my chances? The colleges I am looking at are: USC, Babson, Bentley, NYU, University of Washington, the three top UCs, UIUC, and Cal Poly
There is no set rule that every college admission office follows. Some colleges recalculate (in various ways such as unweighted, academic subjects only etc.) and others don’t. In any event the schools will have the transcript and see all of the exact grades.
Basically, is my gpa on my transcript the one colleges use (I have my total gpa, total academic gpa, and 10-12 GPA on my transcript) or will they recalculate it and by recalculating it will it significantly hurt my chances and make it so I college I would have gotten into I won’t get into anymore because of the recalculation? Let me know if you can
@happy1 out of the colleges I listed is there a way to find out which ones would recalculate? Also if you could note my question above ^
My understanding is that most universities recalculate it. Otherwise kids in my town won’t get into top universities because where I live a 98 is an A+ but is counted as 3.7.
A few years back I was surprised when a colleague mentioned that their son had a 4.0, but that he had several grades of 90 or 91. More recently I have figured out (largely through the help of this web site) that GPA calculation is all over the place in various schools across the US.
My 3.76 is unweighted my weighted is like a 4.3 or something. I took 3APs sophomore year and 5 Junior Year. BTW so I am asking about my unweighted gpa. Will the recalculation hurt enough to make it so I won’t get into a college I previously would have gotten Into. My school does 90 percent as a 4.0 because of how hard it is(it’s in the Silicon Valley where everything is competitive)
“Will the recalculation hurt enough to make it so I won’t get into a college I previously would have gotten Into”
You won’t know until you apply and hear back. That is one of the reasons why you need to have safety schools on your list.
Unless it is on the school website (which is quite rare) there is now way to know if or how a college recalculates GPA. I believe that the UCs have a standard way to recalculate GPA which you can google.
As I would say to everyone you need to apply to a range of colleges including reach, match and safety schools that appear affordable (run net price calculator) and that you would be happy to attend.
