GPA question

How do you convert a GPA of a 100 point scale to one of a 4.0 scale?
For example, is an A = to a 4.0 or is that not how it works?

It depends on the school...there isn't one exact way to do it.

Assuming you're in the US-- look up your board policies or just ask your counselor.

It does really vary.
In some places in Canada... an 80 is a 4.0
Others... 90=A.... 92=A... 93=A

And then, of course, parts of my state including my county where 96=4.0

Typically though, an A=4.0 unless you go somewhere like my school--- but it only matters for ranking because most schools recalculate your GPA.

I see. So colleges will recalculate my GPA according to my transcript? Our school has it so that 94-100 is an A, 85-93 is a B... I don't know the rest.

aigiqinf:
In my school(Canada) 80+ is considered an A. So would 80+ get automatically converted to 4.0 in US schools?

Generally speaking, taking away the +s and -s:

90-100 = A = 4.0
80-90 = B = 3.0
70-80 = C = 2.0
60-70 = D = 1.0

And then, in my school at least,
A = 4.0
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
B = 3.0.

And so on.

Let's consult the CC bible. (A is for Admission)
I assume that Ivy League schools are the ones you guys are interested in.

For Canada-- your regional director would put a note about the rigor of your classes. If however, 90's are not rare and you have an 80 average-- you have very little chance of admission.
LOL Actually, if your school ranks your grades aren't important.

Here's how grades/rank affect admission:

AI=(SATM+SATV+SATW)/3+(SAT I+SAT II+ SAT III)/3+CRS

CRS=Converted Rank Score (The Highest Possible is 80)
One must be val in a class of AT LEAST 300 to have a CRS of 80. (You don't get any extra points for being val in a larger class)

However, if your school doesn't rank they have a conversion chart.
Your overall average must be a 98-100 to have a CRS of 80.
(I have a CRS of (77-78)/80)

If your school is either very difficult in grading, or very easy your regional director would note this and the admissions officer would adjust accordingly.

The AI is then given a score of 1-9 in most places and your ECs are given a score of 1-9. Admissions goes from there.

*SAT Scores are entered as two digit numbers i.e. 80=800

I don't know however, how non-ivy league schools do it.

For the sake of CC chancing, you should probably do 93-100=4.0 because it is the most common. If your school doesn't do GPA, you can tell people that your GPA is a 4.0 if your average is equal to or higher than what your school considers an A, although you should probably just tell them x/100.
For college admissions, no one really gets a leg up for their grading scale. You just pretty much have to have the highest grades in your milieu.

Hope that helps.
