GPA Question

Hi, I'll be a senior this year, and am planning on applying to harvard, amongst other ivies.
I come from a prestigious secondary school in Connecticut.
I've had three B+ grades throughout my high school career, and else have been As. My GPA is a 4.0/4.3.
It works like this:
A+:4.3
A:4.0
A-:3.7
B+:3.3
...

Do you think this will affect my chances significantly, even though I have gotten additional A+es to balance out the B+es to manage a 4.0? Do you think it will affect my chances at Harvard? And other Ivies?

Thank you!!! I will chance back!!!

In all honesty, even if you had a 4.3, it would be a crapshot in applying to an Ivy, esp. Harvard. However, to answer your question, NO, I don’t think any college would care that you got a few A’s instead of A+'s.

thanks–but I had a couple B+es. Isn’t that pretty bad? Or not?

Well if the few B+s are in junior year and in classes related to the major you’re going for then that may be a slight concern. Also how are your grades in comparison to your classmates, and what it the rigor of your classes. B+s in tough APs can be forgiven, and if you have a very high class rank despite the B+s that will help. I wouldn’t stress over the B+s, you should probably just worry about making your app as good as possible.

The biggest issue will be who else is applying from your school and how you rank against them in terms of grades, scores and ECs. If there are legacies and recruited athletes (as you’ll often find at good CT schools), etc.

Private school?
Did you check your school’s Naviance?

A agree with Redroses. GPA and test scores are just part of the game. In my D’s school, there are one kid with 1900 SAT went to MIT and 2.8 GPA went to Stern.

How’s your ECs?

But anyway, prepare to write an extra outstanding essay and work close with your college adviser. Don’t forget the importance of recommendations.

Good luck !

Thanks. I’m taking the hardest courseload available, and the B+es were not in classes related to my major. And, they were freshman year (2) and sophomore year (1). Otherwise, I should be in top 8/215 or so… This is just approximating, and we don’t have naviance at school. Thanks!
