GPA recalculation+chances

My GPA is about a 3.87 unweighted, on a 4.6 scale, without freshman year included. Do you know how Michigan rescales your GPA to be out of a 4.0? An A- average in my school would be a 4.0 and a B+ average would be a 3.6, so I'm somewhere in the middle of an A- and B+ average, does anybody know what my GPA would recalculate to be? I read earlier that you have to take out non-academic courses, which are still included in my 3.87 GPA, but what is a non-academic course. Phys ed...is health one? and are electives such as Art considered academic? Also...what are my chances of getting in...I'm out of state, an athlete (not be recruited, but plan on joining swim team, my application might just be 'flagged'), my recommendations are both good, I have some clubs and activities but no leadership positions, I've only taken 2 Honors courses and 2 AP courses...doesn't sound so impressive :( My sat score is a 1340, (2030 out of all 3 sections) verbal - 650 math - 690 writing - 690

One more thing...I'm kind of scared cause my stuff won't all be in until November 4th...is that really late?? All my friends are getting annoyed with me cause I'm so obsessed with Michigan so I figured I'd be obsessed on this forum instead of to my friends. And I just figured out what my Michigan GPA would be about...if they really don't count +/-'s then sophmore year I would have a 4.0, and Junior year about a 3.5, so I'd have a 3.75 ish. We don't count gym and health right? Or do we count health and just not gym?

Here's what Michigan does with your GPA:

1) Get rid of freshman grades
2) Get rid of non-academic core classes
3) Get rid of all grade boosts
4) Get rid of all pluses and minuses

So If you had a B+ in AP English, that's a 3.0 on their scale. An A- in Spanish would be a 4.0.

No you don't count Gym and Health. Art isn't an academic. The academics they will count are English, History/Social Studies, Math, Foreign Language, and Science. The best way for us to evaluate your chances is for you to post your transcript for Soph and Junior years. Then we can let you know of your true GPA.

A 3.75 for an OOS applicant is about average. Won't help your chances. And I believe a 1340 SAT is about average, maybe a little above average. So i'd say about a 60% chance, just like all the other applicants. It's a solid match.

I don't know if I'm competitive for admissions to LSA --If you could give me some idea of my chances I would really appreciate it!
Mich GPA- 3.63
ACT- 34
SAT IIs -- US History- 780, Literature- 790, French - 700
reasonable ECs but not spectacular
Upward trend in GPA (3.2 sophomore year-- 4.0 Junior year)
10 APs -- 5s in the 3 exams I've already taken-- I'm taking 7 AP courses this year (grades so far are 4 As and 2 Bs)
strong courseload all 4 years (all accelerated or honors)
I will be submitting the application this weekend
Thank you so much for the help!!

I personally don't like commenting on "chances" posts because it really doesn't matter at all what I think in the admissions game. It only matters what the adcom thinks about your application.

However, you're certainly a competitive applicant for LSA. You've taken many tough courses and have an awesome ACT score. What were your ec's like? If you have a few of those hanging around somewhere, I'd say you definitely have a shot of getting accepted. However, get that application to them soon!

Thanks for your assesment reeses. I normally wouldn't ask for my chances, it's just that I have a rather poor grasp on where I stand in the michigan application pool. My ecs are decent; mostly community service with a few leadership roles- my main worry is the GPA, which seems to be below average from what I've read on CC.

Mich GPA- 3.75 (took 2 college courses and got 2 Bs and an A. With these 2 courses factored in its a 3.67)
SAT I - V- 730, M - 800, W - 740. 2270 total
SAT IIs -- Math IIC - 790, Chemistry - 740, US History- 710
President of 2 clubs, Varsity tennis(#2 on the team, State champions for the 2nd year in a row), 200 hours of community service
9 APs -- 4 5s (Calc BC, Chem, US History, Comp Sci A), and 1 4 (English Lang), taking 4 this year.
strong courseload all 4 years (all AP or honors when possible)

So what do you think my chances are of getting into the College of Engineering? Will be submitting the app within a week.
