I have a question about how colleges recalculate GPAs...do they do it based on your term/semester grades, or based on the final grades that you received in each class?

Your transcript will probably only contain (and therefore colleges will probably only use) year-final grades. The main exceptions would be for classes which only last a semester (duh) and the first semester of senior year.

My transcript, according to the guidance counselor of my school, contains 3 semesters’ grades but ‘final grades’ will make GPA, not semester grades. However, how do colleges recalculate GPA?

Final grades in each class are what matters. See: http://www.possibilityu.com/how-calculate-your-“real”-high-school-gpa

Bump

Are you in high school, or college? I haven’t heard of a high school having a class made up of 3 semesters’ yielding one final grade. Do you mean 3 grading periods per semester (3 week, 6 week, final grade? In that case, only the final fall/spring grades count. Our school (in CA) issues report cards every semester, even if it is a year-long class. So if you get an A the first semester and a B the second semester, your GPA for that class will be a 3.5, not a 3.0.

Not all colleges do it, including elites. Can’t speak for all of them. But most aren’t as concerned about gym, drivers ed, ceramics, cuisine and whatever else it is that may stuff a curriculum nowadays.

Many hs report semester grades and not a final grade, btw.

I’m a junior at high school. In our school, each academic year contain 3 semesters. I have 6 IB classes and have them for all 3 semesters, which means I don’t have different classes in different semesters. The grades of the 3rd semester are final grades and contain all 3 semesters topics, so my Q is that: Will colleges recalculate my GPA based on final grades (3rd sem.) or the average of 3 semesters in each class?

Bump

OK, first off, if you have 3 grading periods a year, you are on a trimester calender, not a semester calendar. A semester in high school is Fall/Spring and each is usually subdivided into two quarters. Unless your school has some crazy grading scheme that you are not articulating well. Your transcript will look like:

Class Credits Fall Win Spr Yr

Spanish II 1.0 B+ A- A
3.3 3.7 4.0 3.7

The year grade is the average of your term grades.

My school uses only the final grades, it does not average scores. So will colleges do the same? (I have IB subjects)

Bump

Why are you continuing to bump this thread? Most likely, colleges will use the grades as provided by your high school – what other choice do they have? If you want a more specific answer, ask your guidance counselor!
