Hi,
I am somewhat confused regarding how I should respond to my common app GPA section. My school tells its students both our unweighted and weighted GPA, but I’m not sure what the “GPA scale” is for my weighted GPA. I understand that my unweighted 4.0 is out of 4, but if I have a 4.91 wGPA would the scale be out of 4 or 5? And should I report that instead of my unweighted GPA? (I’m sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but I just want to confirm before I make a mistake)
Thanks
out of 5. report whichever they base your rank on.
Your weighted GPA is out of 5. Personally, I would put the GPA that will appear on your transcript. The colleges will see your GPA on your transcript either way. If you’re not sure, can you call your school to find out what GPA to use?
@JaySwam Hold on. It depends on what scale your high school uses. Is it indicated on your report card? If you know for sure that your high school is on a 5.0 scale, then your gpa would be 4.91/5.0. However, if your high school uses a 4.0 scale, then you would have a 4.91/4.0 which indicates you have taken lots of honors and AP classes which are probably weighted and you have done well in them. They are two different things.
At my Ds school, when she was a senior last year, the HS changed from a 5.0 to a 4.0 scale which caused some confusion for kids and families. So as it turned out, she had a perfect 4.0/4.0 unweighted, and a 4.76/4.0 weighted. Do you see what I mean? You need to check with your GC to see how your gpa is reported on your transcript.
