GPA standards

"I have read that colleges "recalculate" GPA's - is there any standard whatsoever?"

I asked that question on the board here a few weeks back and one of the CC people suggest I write the school I was interested in and ask what they do. Got a nice, quick reply saying they don't recalculate.

Asking makes perfect sense, though I suspect it could take longer to get a reply now that many schools are in the tight part of their ED cycle.

But if one is taking AP classes and getting A's and another is taking general ed - or regulare college prep - and getting A's...is it fair to count them equally in equating GPA's? And schools do vary tremendously as JLP says...
Then again, SATs can be taken several times, prepped for, etc. And even good "test takers" can have an "off" day.
My S took SAT's once as a junior and again as a senior. It will be interesting to see his test scores on the 17th and if there is much difference (upward, I hope!)
I don't envy adcoms having to figure all this out...and develop a system that makes some sort of sense.

forgot to add , I have asked S about cheating and he says he has never seen it...but he is also sure that it happens...
