GPA. this thread is not meant for the weak hearted, so beware!!

ok, you first of all did not have 13 SEMESTERS for TWO years... im bettin you counted years. and secondly, senior years doesnt mean anything until you already get accepted. the only senior stuff that matters is the difficulty of the classes youre taking

Did you read my next post...I said my school only keeps records of final grades and all of my courses were year-long courses. So, instead of adding a maximum of 8 AP points, I just add 1/2 per AP class up to a max of 4, which means my UC GPA is closer to a 3.85.

well im not some official guy so i dont know if its just 4.. but logically it seems sound

in any case, apps are due at the end of this month!! AHH!!

eh, you got two weeks =)

good luck though

sorry for the thread hijacking but anyways

According to the 8 semesters of weighting thing, I have a 4.04 with a 2270 (1530) old scale.

Does my high SAT score make up for me being .13 below UC Berkeley's average GPA?

your SAT is godlike for UCs, and above average for berkeley (probably around 80%)

so if you have good other stuff, then its looking good, unless youre out of state, in which case id give you 50/50 if your other stuff is in order

and, 50/50 from out of state is godly

Hey Kenneth what about a 2210 (760m,730cr,720w) from Maryland with a 3.85 UC-weighted GPA? I'm applying to Davis and Berkeley...I think I should get into Davis, is that right? And maybe OK chances to Berkeley?

Kenneth:
What about in state with low SATs? For example, I have 650M 640V 680W (1970), but solid essays and solid ECs? For example, I have research and have written one research paper (also, where would I include this?). My GPA is fairly solid--4.21W and 3.83UW. What do you think my chances are?

zking786, you have weak SATs relative to what?

Your chances are ultimately unpredictable, but even here even more so because there's a lot more information needed to assess that, including the college you're applying to.

I know what you mean.

With respect my SAT score, it seems low comparing to other posters and other students who've attended from my HS.

I know the application process is very unpredictable, but doesn't UCB strongly weight standardized scores--don't they judge you largely by your statistics?

Also, I'm applying to UCB only, probably not UCLA (due to my parents' concern that an earthquake is likely to occur in the next few years).

Haha yeah, northern california is much safer than southern california as far as earthquakes go. How about that great one in LA? Oh wait, that was San Francisco . . . if you want to go to UCLA, and the earthquake is the reason why your parents won't let you apply, please reason with them. Cal's football stadium is on a fault line. How's that for earthquakes?

I had about your SAT I scores and got in. I didn't calculate and recalculate my GPA, though (i try my best not to be neurotic like many kids on this board. however, I post on this board so how unneurotic am i? ;)) I had an upward trend . . . I had an increasingly difficult course schedule. I took classes outside of high school towards the end of my high school years. I applied to L and S, not the college of chemistry or engineering. I had pretty high SAT II scores compared to the country averages, average to above average compared to Berkeley admits. There's a lot to it, really, there is, but yes, Berkeley does care a lot about GPA, course selection and difficulty, and test scores.

Keep in mind that most people on this board freak out if a four they got on an AP test they studied for on their own time, and explain away B+s, A-s, 760's, things that normal people are happy to get. Normal people get into schools, too. You have a chance, but it's probably best to not freak out about if yo uwill or will not get in. Your chances are fine, go work on your application and be productive.

Shock does UCB care about AP exam scores?

I don't think so, but I haven't seen any evidence that any school does.

UCs dont care about AP exams??? i find that extremely comical

they have about 20 slots for you to enter your AP results in on the application, so uh... thats pretty much self-explanitory

to live-: youre SAT is way good enough for Davis and pretty good for berk, but your GPA is extremely low even for in-state standards

according to US News, every UC up to santa barbara and irvine have 95% and up of students who were in top 10% of their high schools

so my suggestion, WORK REALLY REALLY REALLY hard on your essays! and make sure you HAVE POINTS THAT WILL INCREASE YOUR APPEAL!! UCs dont really care if you are eloquent, they only care about content... sooo, if you only live with one parent or something, EXPLOIT IT!!!

I question your judgement as to what the UC readers want in essays, kenneth2005. Also, your assertion doesn't explain why many kids get into UCLA and not Berkeley, or Berkeley and not UCLA. Can you really clump them together as one mass? Yeah, they look for similar, but differen things.

Kenneth, I am actually ranked in the top 5% at my school...so maybe they'll take that into account if I put that in the additional info section or something?

Anyway, I am definitely going to be working hard on my essays :).

kenneth:
Are you refering to my situation? I am ranked 2/480 because of my high weighted GPA.

well it depends how your school ranks.. some schools rank weighted some rank unweighted.. so technically some guy with straight As but all regular classes has a higher rank than some guy with one B but 50 honors classes at a school that ranks unweighted GPA.

usually, high schools leave it to the colleges to weight the GPA because many colleges do it very differently.

if you have your rank available i think theres a section where you put it on the application but i havent looked at it for ages..

and zking, i just want to say that your rank is extremely god like

and btw, how come this thread has become some kind of UC question fest!??!

kenneth:
Good point, it has become a question thread. To further add to this question fest...

Do you think the UC system values the rank? From what you're saying, it seems like they don't really use rank very heavily.

Also, is my GPA low, or were you refering to someone else? I'm still sort of confused.

Lastly, can a strong GPA/rank overpower SAT scores? I know you're not an adcom :-), but you seem to be very experienced.

i kinda have been reseraching this since birth...

anyway, your gpa is like, probably around 75%ile for acceptees and your SAT i know their 25%ile is 1200 so i guess that translates into 1800 on the new scale.. meaning your 170 points above the 25%ile, making you probably around the 50%ile...

of course, this is all for in state... (im assuming youre out of state, since otherwise you shouldnt have so many questions)

also, make sure you used my "formula thing" from above to calculate your UC GPA!!! thats very different from weighting every single honors/ ap class you have... anyway, SAT scores come out tomorrow..
