GPA to keep scholarship

My S received the presidential scholarship-full tuition, honors, etc. and I noticed that he will need to maintain a 3.25 or better to keep his scholarship. I was wondering if anyone could discuss how difficult this will be, or perhaps won’t be, especially for an engineering major. Thanks.

What is the grading scale at the college? Like are there A+s and what is each grade worth? Also, how many units will your S have to carry each semester?

Good questions Albert69. We are re-visiting on Wednesday and I will ask then. And hopefully some current students and/or parents can answer.

@Marylandfour That’s good. I understand the concern - I am taking a scholarship that has 3.5 GPA requirement and am going into aerospace engineering. It’s going to be very hard, but it’s a great opportunity because the scholarship is full ride.

is a 3.25 now? my son is a freshman and it was 3.0 to keep scholarship and 3.25 to stay in honors. i think it is doable for engineering. my son is in communications and has had no trouble keeping the GPA. he has found the honors classes more enjoyable and in some ways easier to maintain good grades in them as opposed to the gen ed classes that are open to anyone. and the honors dept goes out of its way to find what it considers teh best teachers to teach the honors classes. honors gets lots of feedback from the honors kids in determining who these teachers are. so bottom line is the 3.0 should be doable even for engineering. a 3.25, not so sure on but likely doable with hard work. i do know a lot of honors kids go to med school and by this i mean, they are taking the harder majors yet maintaining the GPA to still have a shot at med school. i recomened your kid takes honors classes that sound appealing to him and don’t be afraid to ask for help if the GPA gets in the grey range. i think the honors dept will help him in finding help if that happens and brainstorm with him on ways to keep the GPA in scholarship range if he asks for help, also, he will have some accesss to upper class engineering students who have pullled off the gpa requirments and can get some ideas from them. Regarding another question. A;s are worth 4.0. i have not figured out if B’s are all worth 3.0 or if a B+ is a 3.33. the teachers describe how they will handle grading at the first semester class.

@ctl987, you might be correct about 3.25 for honors and 3.0 for scholarship. I will try to find out more information when we visit again this week.

I don’t believe it should be that difficult to keep a 3.0/3.25. But that of course depends on the student.

Engineering is a difficult major but looking at the Dean’s List GPA cut-off (top 16%) it’s 3.53 which is pretty high but it is the lowest out of all schools. Engineering students need to take harder courses like Calculus and Physics so it’ll be challenging but he should do fine!

You can look at the academic bulletin for the classes he’ll need and a recommended course plan.

Met with the honors dept this week. Out of 1600 total honors students an average of 30 get dismissed due to gpa every year.
