GPA used by UCs and other schools

I see that there are 3 different types of GPA: Weighted, Unweighted and UC GPA.
As I see, UC GPA falls in between Weighted and Unweighted.
Anyone knows what is the GPA that the UCs use in their consideration of applications?
Also, my son’s unweighted GPA calculation does not include the PE classes that he took every year (because of being on the Varsity team) and so his Unweighted GPA looks kind of low but would the colleges consider looking at his PE course and the fact that it is not included in the GPA calculation.
I would appreciate any details on these different kinds of GPAs and wonder how the admissions office looks at them.
Thanks!

http://www.csumentor.edu/planning/high_school/gpa_calculator.asp is the weighted capped GPA calculation used by UCs and CSUs (commonly called “UC GPA”). Most published GPAs in UC web pages and reports refer to this GPA, unless otherwise specified.

UC admission readers will see three variants of GPA:

  • Unweighted, otherwise calculated as above.
  • Weighted capped, calculated as above.
  • Fully weighted, calculated as above but without the limitation of 8 semesters of honors +1 points.

@ucbalumnus:
That’s good to note that they look at all 3 variants of GPA. Yes, I did take a look at that website – thanks.
I am also wondering if extra ECs (Varsity sports, Club presidency, voulnteering) would also play a major part in the consideration of a candidate. My son is kind of an all rounder and has been maintaining a decent GPA (with a rigorous load of courses) in addition to playing and volunteering. Like as of now, his UC GPA is 3.85 and Weighted GPA is 4.25 – wonder if there is a channel for such GPAs amidst a lot of activities at school.
We are now getting stressed out not knowing how the colleges would look at his application…

wow – thats very informative. Thank you so much for the link.

Link for how UC applications are reviewed. Each campus determines where they put greater emphasis on the subjective areas of the application. In general the most important aspects for the UC’s are GPA, test scores, HS course rigor, essays and EC’s in that order. First generation/ low income and geographic residence come next.
