If I have a 3.6 GPA, 4.1 weighted but amazing, hardcore extracurriculars do I have a chance at Princeton?

It might help us if we know what your EC’s are.

Member of Team USA for my sport and I get sent on international competitions all over representing the U.S. I am nationally ranked and put 36 hours a week for the past 10 years into this sport. I am also heavily involved in charitable organizations related to my sport such as Special Olympics and am President of my club with over 800 members. I am also extremely involved in a charity organization where I received a grant for $50000 for an activity I am launching. Leadership is clear throughout my application as is my sport.

Well, it can’t hurt to try. I’ve heard the GPA cutoff (while not official by any means and only estimated) is around 3.7-3.8, but there are always exceptions. Are you a junior?

Also… SAT: 2270
U.S.: 720
Lit: 720

no I already applied… :)

What’s the SAT breakdown? As a composite, it’s within range. SAT II’s are good, but not amazing by Princeton standards.

Math: 790 Cr: 750 W: 730

Yeah, that’s a good score. I think they stop caring what your score is after a certain threshold has been passed anyway, and all of those are good. Well, if you already applied, all you can do is wait! Hopefully your essays conveyed your passion well, and I’m sure they did. Only time will tell if your GPA hurt you or not. :-/

Is a 4.1 weighted really bad when comparing to other applicants?

They care more about unweighted GPA because some schools weight honors while others only weight AP/IB/et cetera. Unweighted, therefore, gives a more accurate picture of how well the student did in comparison to other applicants. Weighted GPA is more useful for determining class rank within a school.

Thanks so much for all the help/advice :)

No problem! Personally, I think your EC’s sound very interesting and the time you put into them is great. My SAT score is lower than yours (2140), but my GPA is higher (3.86). My EC’s are also very passionate and time-consuming, so we’re in a similar boat. Hopefully passion counts for a lot. Good luck!

Recalculate your GPA by taking out freshman year. They don’t even look at freshman year. They don’t care at all. So if you got all your non-As in freshman year, or most of them, you’re looking good. If you got them in junior/senior year, you’re not looking great.

^How about sophomore year? I got a B in one term of Honors Chemistry and a B in two terms of Honors Algebra II. A’s in all my other classes sophomore year (including an AP). Junior year and senior year, I’ve gotten straight A’s (4 AP’s). Of course, it’s not ideal to get any B’s but do they place less weight on sophomore year than they do on junior/senior or just as much?

Well I have 2 B+ and 2 B and 9A/A-s not including electives. I guess I will just see what happens. Hopefully my ecs really shine.

Also all of my classes have been honors/APs and the Bs are usually in math. I miss school for weeks at a time due to my sport/ miss many days a week. I explained this in my app.

What sport is it? Not that it matters, I’m just curious.
FWIW, I think that outstanding achievement, especially for a sport that you could be recruited for, would make up for the low GPA. Of course, I don’t know for sure, but that seems right.

Definitely less emphasis on sophomore year. Colleges LOVE improvement. They know that junior year is the most difficult year, so when you go from having a few Bs to having straight As, that’s a good sign. Not as impressive as having all As, but it’s better than having Bs senior year and none in junior or sophomore year.

Are you guys sure that Princeton uses cut-off score system? I really hope my math activities can make up for my very low SAT score(1890) and I’m international student, but if they use cut off score, then I will probably get rejected from the first place. I also don’t expect Princeton to favor nerdy students but they seem they do, which is unfortunate for me.
